Throughout his treatment for colon cancer, Joe showed courage, dignity, and humor. He would have turned 62 next month. Joe was born Nov. 17, 1943, in Clinton, Indiana. He graduated in chemistry and physics from Indiana University and from the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was stationed at in Yorktown, Virginia, served a year at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, and finished his military service in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a lieutenant. He graduated from UNM Law School in Albuquerque and opened a law practice there. In 1974, he moved to Austin, where he served as a vice president of Title Co., managed an art gallery, and worked for Sunview Development before practicing law again. A growing interest in computer technology led him to positions with NT Computers and AMT Solutions. At the time of his death, he was CIO/General Counsel with e-MDs of Cedar Park, an electronic health records management company. In addition to his interest in chemistry, medicine, computers, and art, Joe's wide-ranging interests included music, sailing, science fiction, orchids, and Mexico. Joe is survived by his daughter, Marie Savage, and her husband, Russ Deaton, of Denton; his mother, Mrs. P. Savage, of Clinton; and his brother and sister-in-law, Lou and Savage, of Clinton. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sat., Oct. 22, at Beck Funeral Home, 1700 E. Whitestone Blvd. (FM 1431); 512/259-1610. The family requests that any donations be made to Odyssey Healthcare of Austin or to Southwest Regional Cancer Center of town. Published in the Austin American-Statesman on 10/20/2005.
