Guest guest
Nothing to help but a comment on fatigue. After chemo the low point in your blood count is 3-4 days after treatment so that is when fatigue is most likely to occur. From that point you hope your blood builds back for the next treatment. Unfortunately you appear to have more side effects than most but oncs are pretty good about handling the individual side effects if you tell them in detail what they are. I kept of log of how and what I felt each day and except for chronic fatigue the onc took care of most of my concerns.
Guest guest
Hmmm , yes take the calcium magnesium for the tingles, however , it seems to me that maybe yall should consider that the dose of chemo he is getting is to high for him?? It just seems odd to me that the neuropathy would set in THIS fast, and that with the intense aches , may mean the dose is to strong ? For the insomnia couldnt they give him a sedative? They did for my husband called Adavant ( I believe ) he also was on the Emend anti nausea ( only one that worked for him) Deb Meri wrote: Daddy had his first round of chemo (FOLFOX4 w/ Avastin) last Wed-Fri and had very few side effects until Monday morning. Now, he feels bad all of the time. In the early morning hours on Monday he had extreme pain and spasms in his lower back and down both legs. His onc told him to go to the ER. He had blood tests, urinalysis, and a CT done. They feared something could be wrong with his kidney function or that he could have an aneurysm. The CT did not show anything wrong with his organs, thank God. They attribute the pain to side effects from the chemo. He has numbness in his jaw, fingers, and toes. He also has tingling and burning in his feet. He has heaviness in his legs and arms. He is very uncomfortable. He has not had any nausea, but he is on aloxi & decadron (iv) and emend & dexamethasone. He still has the insomnia and jitters from the dex even though he stopped taking it on Sunday. He has the option for the Calcium-Magnesium infusion, would it help the neuropathy? Should he also take ALA? If so, how much would you recommend? He is taking some B-6. He also has a very low body temperature (94-96) and low pulse (drops into the 30s-40s frequently.) Is this response common with these drugs? His normal body temp is 98.something and his pulse is usually in the 60s-70s. They were concerned with his pulse at the hospital yesterday. He has high-normal bp. Daddy feels much weaker and has a lot of aches and pains all over his body. Is there anything that you can recommend to help him feel better? We are very concerned about the slowed heart and lowered body temperature-is this common? Thank you for any answers you may provide. I really appreciate it. Take care. You are in my prayers. Guest guest
Hi, I am so sorry that your dad is having such severe side effects. Yes, it has been known that the chemo can effect the joints. But your dad's seems awful severe. I think his onc should consider lowering the dosage of his chemo. It does sound like your dad's system had gotten over whelmed with this dosage. They ussually give the standard dosage taking into consideration his weight and height. Everyone handles this differently and it sounds like your dad is just more senstive to this chemo dosage. When the lowered my dosage towards the end of my chemo since the side effects do get worse as the chemo goes on. The dosage reduction did help so much and the reactions I was having became greatly reduced. Yes, Definatley have him take the Calcium-Magnesium infusion since it does seem to lesson the neuropathy. Again each person handles it differently and this may or may not help. It does seem to lesson the nerve damage that the chemo creates. The chemo is rough on a person. And the fact that your dad is having so many problems this early into the chemo may warrent a dosage reduction. The chemo will make you feel weak and can cause lower blood preasure as well as other things. I had to take a break in the middle of my chemo since my blood preasure which is low to begin with dropped more then my onc was comfotale with. Your dad needs to discuss all of the problems with his onc before they do another infusion. The chemo effects get worse over time since your body does get weaker with each chemo. Most of the time only time between the chemo sessions will make your dad feel better. He must seriously sit down with his onc and have a long talk about all of this. My Prayers are with your father. God Bless him. Hopefully they can find a happy medium and he will be able to tolerate the chemo better. Guest guest
I am assuming that all his organs are clear. What are his blood counts like? Do they think he has an infection? The Calcium Magnesium sounds like a plan. You really need blood work results it sounds like something with either low counts or infection Ask lots of questions as to why this is happening. It sounds strange to be having these reactions a whole week after treatment In a message dated 12/20/2005 10:02:48 PM Eastern Standard Time, merier@... writes: Daddy had his first round of chemo (FOLFOX4 w/ Avastin) last Wed-Fri and had very few side effects until Monday morning. Guest guest
Meri Your dad should take the Calcium-Magnesium infusion, he should NOT take B6 during chemo sessions only in between sessions. I loved decadron!!! It took away all my aches and pains in my knees and hips and helped me breathe better. Course after chemo was all over it came back to me with a vengeance. The aches and pains are back, but I finally have the breathing in control. I am experiencing heaviness in my legs and that just started recently. I am thinking it is a chemo side effect though somewhat delayed. If I sit for a length of time watching tv or in the car driving somewhere when I start to get up it feels as if my legs will go out from under me. Strangely it does not affect me when I get up from resting in bed. Yes the insomnia is normal, he can get sleep aids. Low body temp is normal - my temp is just now getting up in the normal range, but it was always 96 or 97 . If it got over 97 I would know I had a fever. I don't know about the slowed heart. Aches and pains - he should be able to get some pain meds - I had Percocet (oxicondin sp?) but mostly for my back. Finally started taking Tylenol. Just be aware the Percocet will or can cause constipation. I am on bp meds and for most part my bp was in normal ranges during chemo. I am sure others will contribute more advice.. I never had any extreme reactions to chemo - mostly just tiredness. Hugs and Prayers for all the family.. Jolene
