Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, I went to their website and it says that Flora Bears are for ages 4 and up. Zach is only 19 months old. I am not sure about giving them to him or how much to give. Do you you know why it would be four and up?? Is there anything like this for babies? Guest guest
Sara, At this point, I wouldn't worry about the age limitations. Probiotics won't hurt Zach, it's not like you're giving him digestive enzymes; you're simply replacing what's likely missing by antibiotic consumption. The easiest probiotic to begin with for young babies and children is yogurt. Look for a yogurt that says " live cultures " and contains more than acidolphilus. Health food stores and pharmacists can guide you in your selections. Kim --- " dwson2 " <sara@d...> wrote: > Hi Jeanne, > I went to their website and it says that Flora Bears are for ages 4 > and up. Guest guest
, I had read that Probiotics helps diarrhea. Donelle is right, why don't doctors tell us these things are available?? , thank you for the info on its different forms, how to take it and how to store it. These are all things that would be important to know. Glad you helped us with this. ~Deb from KS brencolinmom@... wrote: Donelle: Please get him on probiotics. When you are on antibiotics (not to mention chemo), all of the beneficial bacteria in the colon is killed right along with all the bad stuff. You can ask for a live brand with millions of those active little guys at your health food store. Do you have Whole Foods where you live? ...exactly what is probiotics?? Is it a pill or powder or liquid?? And why don't drs. tell us these things are available?? I did know the anti-b kill all the bacteria, but for 7 wks we've tried all kinds of prescriptions....and almost anything mentioned here (except for yogurt... he wouldn't do that) Lots of hugs and prayers, Donelle Caregiver to Glenn Oh Donelle. Probiotics come in liquid (drinkable) form or in pill form. The best are those you buy at a health food store that are kept in the refrigerator or the liquid form (also refrigerated). It is the acidophilus and bifidobacteria plus FOS, etc. that your colon needs to be healthy. It should not be taken with food but on an empty stomach (30-60 mins before eating). Yogurt has some of these of course but it is more potent if you take one of the brands that contain literally millions or billions of these. I just looked in my refrigerator and I have Jarrow Formulas " Jarro-Dophilus + FOS " and also Ethical Nutrients " Intestinal Care " . However, there is a very expensive liquid form that I love to take that I buy at Whole Foods (don't have any right now and cannot recall the name). One of them is fruit flavored and comes in a six pack of individual servings (small). I don't take these daily but when I shop there I pick up a couple. The pill forms should be taken daily and kept in the frig. --------------------------------- Yahoo! FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click. Sorry, Jolene, I really can't give the drs. a " break " ...this is their area of expertise and we depend on THEM...we pay THEM for their knowledge. They shouldn't have so many patients that they can't take care of all of them!!! Just my humble opinion!! Thanks so much to for sharing her knowledge...I will look for Probiotics, get Glenn started on them and keep on hand, just in case Glenn does get well enough to try the other chemo....or in case he needs another anti-b for some reason!! He won't eat yogurt...won't even try the new creamy ones. Donelle Caregiver to Glenn
Guest guest
Yes I think docs should be more informative of things like things but give them just a tad of a break, Just imagine ALL the stuff they do have to remember, it is mind boggling. Some of the try to have some sort of semblance of a real life, they spend so much time with their patients as it is. If they have a good assistant who keeps abreast of things like this then maybe they would know the extra things.. Oh well so it goes. Cheers Jolene Re: Probiotics , I had read that Probiotics helps diarrhea. Guest guest
Deb: Probiotics does help diarrea. Every cycle of chemo sheds the lining of the colon and you need to take these to get it back again. .
Guest guest
Hi April, I believe Culturelle contains inulin, for one thing... which is illegal on SCD. Go check Elaine's official website: www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and look in the " Knowledge Base " for inulin.... that will explain it better than I can. All probiotics are not created equal.... Elaine's website, and the book, both have thorough information about which ones, and why. There is a list of legal supplements and probiotics on the www.pecanbread.com website. Congrats on the yogurt! That will be the best source of probiotics you can get! Patti Probiotics << My question is if we are putting in good strains of bacteria and trying to heal the gut, would it not be ok to use culturelle? Its got the lactobicilla (or whatever) but the SCd probiotics I've read about are acidopholus.>> << I did my first batch of 24 hour yogurt and am pleased with the yogurt maker I bought at Sonoma!>>
Guest guest
**On the Culturelle site is states that lactobacillus GG is Lactobacillus caseii subspecies rhamnosus, is this the same as normal Lactobacillus Rhamnosus? andrew wrote: > > the lactobacillus GG is a particularly good strain, unfortunately not > avoavaliable here in australia without the bifidus > > > > > > Culturelle has the Lactobacillus GG strain. > > Elaine recommended L. Guest guest
Culturelle is cultured inmilk. Some docs say that it doesn't matter evenif you're ige to milk and others stay away. Culturelle has had the most testing and studies done onits effectiveness of all the probiotics. Hope this helps. Bradstreet's office says no culturelle if you're ige tomilk. Other dans say okay. Don'tknow as far as the scd diet goes. The manufacturer is friendly and will email you about the product. I have spent some time checking this out Rob's mom Re: Probiotics Culturelle has the Lactobacillus GG strain. Elaine recommended L. Acidophilus, but I am sure there are other parents on the list who have used Culturelle. Perhaps they will chime in and say how this worked with SCD. For die-off, try getting some activated charcoal. Also Epsom Salts baths help ease some of the discomfort for some people. I would highly recommend the Intro Diet and adding foods slowly if that is at all possible. I think you will get the best results that way. Keep a food log. It will really help. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/
Guest guest
Cindy, Progurt is a just a name brand for a yogurt starter. That is needed to ferment the yogurt. A " probiotic " is usually how we refer to additional beneficial bacteria that are supplemented. They don't need to be added to the yogurt... although they could be. Kids who can, just swallow capsules... for those who can't, we open capsules and mix the probiotic in applesauce, or whatever food works. Elaine Gottschall always suggested doing both SCD yogurt and supplemental acidophilus. Patti probiotics Can someone please explain to me the difference between probiotics and progurt? I understand that the progurt is placed in the yogurt, but do you use the probiotics as well at the same time? Thank you Cindy, mom of Kasam 4 1/2 ASD For information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, please read the book _Breaking the Vicious Cycle_ by Elaine Gottschall and read the following websites: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and http://www.pecanbread.com
