Most (if not all) major routes through Europe have a number which is the same whatever country it goes through - they begin with the letter E. The road that you pick up from Rotterdam and head east across Europe has a single European Road number (E?) which continues until you reach Berlin - although it will also have it's individual country road numbers as well. This makes it a lot easier to navigate across mainland Europe. When I lived in Germany in the 70's and Holland in the 80's - these road numbers were used both in maps and on the roads. The same maps (which were from Holland and Germany) - also marked certain UK main trunk roads, with their relevant " E number " , but I noticed that when you arrived in the UK, these numbers were not given on the road signs, nor were they on UK maps. I think that the A14 - which runs from Harwich to Holyhead ( I think) has a European number, but it just isn't used in the UK.
