Guest guest
Hi Karima: I am new to the group but thought I would add my two cents here. Have had radiation/chemo Nov 04 to March 05; then colon/rectum resection and iliostomy - March 05 - more chemo/radiation; then reversal iliostomy in August. My biggest trouble in all of this espcially NOW that I no longer have a bag is diarrhea... The list below is somewhat helpful -some of those don't work for me - ie carrots and milk products make the problem worse. I FINALLY-after another exam and talking to surgeons this week have found something that is working for me. The fiber product KONSYL works - I take it first thing in morning - tastes terrible - but no other brands or chewables worked. Doc says try staying away from dairy - and artificial sweeteners - Equal etc. can be a bowel stimulant - I did not know that before. I cut out the pop - stick to only one cup of coffee (caffiene stimulates bowels too,) It is confusing when you hear " low fiber " works and then you turn around and they say go " high fiber. " This Konsyl (find it with the other Metamucil type products in any drugstore) is working so well I can eat more balanced whearas before I was cutting out all fruits and veggies... You have to shake it - it doesn't dissolve well, but I have been reduced from 10 to 12 loose, watery stools (as well as some accidents) per day to around 4, sometimes 1! depends what you eat. You may want to try this - can do one to three times a day, I am doing just once in the morning. Good luck with this annoying problem! Pat Fly to Deb wrote: Hi, Karima. Are you eating the foods which constipate? This is a list I have started, from reading online. Do not know if it is all correct. Maybe some of this is bad for diabetics. Others bad for colostomy. Some of this may not work for everyone. Constipating Foods? products made of white flour bread cakes pastries crackers pretzels pasta biscuits (probably means cookies) fleshy foods (what is that?) preserves white sugar banana rice, rice pudding hard-boiled eggs pulses (peas and beans?) milk cheese ice cream yogurt corn and corn products, grits carrots Seitan (Wheat Gluten) baked potato pizza Probiotics pills (wonder if there is a walmart generic of this yet?) I read that if a food is constipating it will not constipate you if you eat at the same time a Healthy Fat such as Extra Virgin Olive Oil. So think about that. Fat may be making you loose. Also I read online that coffee has a drying effect on the colon. But someone else may know if this is true or not. Don't forget that someone's doctor said you can take twice the amount that it says on the Imodium AD box. When you are desperate, take what you need. Looking at the imodium.com website tonight to see if they have anything new, saw they have a $1.00 off coupon, but you have to fill out a short questionnaire. heh ~Deb from KS karima1 wrote: I am up in the middle of the night with the runs (ick) so I just took immodium. stay well. karima --------------------------------- Yahoo! Guest guest
Oh, and I forgot - I have started on probiotics - can be found in any health food store - or found as lactobaccilis- they help normalize the healthy flora and bacteria in the intestine - also good to normalize the female system if you are prone to yeast infections and dryness - which also happens due to the system being so " off. Guest guest
I rec'd an advertisement from Bottom Line books on Healthy Remedies without prescriptions. One of the ads in the promotion material was that coconut macaroons will eleviate the runs......I take no responsibility for this, just thought it was interesting enough to pass on.....I guess you would have to buy the book to find out why and how.....I'll read the ad again tonight and see if I missed that part........
