Guest guest
I've read a lot of posts where people say they're fast phase 1 / slow phase 2 liver metabolizers. Based on the symptoms that I know of, I believe I have this too. But how did you determine you had this? Are there tests you can do to confirm this, or is it just based on symptoms? Is it genetic (ie. you're born that way), or acquired (eg. from mercury toxicity), or can it be a combination of both? Can it be " cured " , or at least greatly improved? And if so, how? The only thing that I'm aware of that helps are certain supplements, like oregano oil, niacinamide, and grapefruit or grapefruit seed extract. Is there anything else one can do? Also, does anyone know *how* having fast phase 1 liver metabolism can cause anxiety, or a " sped up " feeling? I heard it had something to do with the metabolites produced during the process, but was curious to know more about the specifics involved. Lotsa specific questions here, so any info at all would be appreciated. Suzanne

I don't know if any other labs do it, but it is part of the Comprehensive Liver Detox Profile test by Great Smokies, now Genova labs. This was the test that also used to tell you your plasma cysteine and sulfate levels, but Andy says now that Genova took over, the cysteine test is no longer useful. Anyway, it does measure your phase 1 and four of your phase 2 pathways.----------Jackie Is it genetic (ie. you're born that way), or acquired (eg. from mercury toxicity), or can it be a combination of both? ----------It probably can be both, but mercury certainly can cause liver problems----------Jackie Can it be " cured " , or at least greatly improved? And if so, how? ----------Chelation should help in the long run, but in the short term supplementation can help alot, and diet, and avoiding certain things/chemicals/drugs, etc. Andy talks about this liver stuff starting on page 40 of AI, and also in the Liver section starting on page 110.------Jackie The only thing that I'm aware of that helps are certain supplements, like oregano oil, niacinamide, and grapefruit or grapefruit seed extract. Is there anything else one can do? ---------The supplements you mention above are for slowing down phase 1, and can help alot. But you can also help by supplementing things that your phase 2 pathways need, and Andy talks about those in AI on the pages mentioned above. There is a chart on page 43. So if your phase 2 sulfation is slow and/or you are low in sulfate, then supplmenting sulfate and avoiding things/foods that require sulfation will help. If methylation is slow, then you take more methyl donors, etc.--------Jackie Also, does anyone know *how* having fast phase 1 liver metabolism can cause anxiety, or a " sped up " feeling? I heard it had something to do with the metabolites produced during the process, but was curious to know more about the specifics involved. ----------My understanding is that when you have fast phase 1, then things get bottle-necked in the liver, waiting to be processed through phase 2, and that these intermediate metabolites are more toxic than the orginal thing. On page 110 of AI, Andy says, " Impaired methylation leads to slow clearance of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which would exacerbate agitation, anxiety, and " psychotic " symptoms. " Not sure if that answers your question, but you could also search archives for posts by Andy about this stuff. There is also a link to another website talking about phase 1 and 2 in the Links section of this group.-------Jackie Lotsa specific questions here, so any info at all would be appreciated.
