Re: does iodine help excretion of mercury?

I have the same question. suggested I take 10 mg/day

iodine (but I forgot to ask whether this is long- or short-term).

At the iodine4health web site, which advocates high dose iodine for

many ailments, Brownstein claims that iodine can increase mercury

excretion in urine.

Incidentally, taking high-dose iodine can supposedly make you feel

crummy while your body pushes out its chlorine, fluorine, and bromine

toxins. I'm feeling crummy (e.g., need 1-2 naps per day), so this

could be why, or it could be DMPS, Lamisil, yeast, dysbiosis, adrenal,

or mercury....

While I am not a doctor or a scientist, I can attest that bad stuff of some

sort comes out for a couple of months when one does the loading dose (50mg)

of Iodoral. This, according to Dr. Brownstein, would appear to be

especially Bromide, which is also a halogen (second last column of the

periodic table).

When building up the dosage, you initially feel great with more energy due

to better thyroid function, but as you significantly increase it, you get

(well I got – many apparently don’t get) bad symptoms for a couple of

months, like pins and needles, skin itching, feeling down etc.

Healthier salts, like Himalayan rock salt does seem to do wonders to fight

these “symptoms” (which I believe is simply due to detoxification of Bromide

and not due to adverse reactions to Iodine per se). As salts is largely

Chlorine atoms compounded with other alkaline metals, this would seem to

make sense seeing Chlorine is a “stronger” halogen than Bromide, while

Iodine is “weaker” and therefore has a much harder time ridding the body of

bad halogens like Bromide.

After a few months these symptoms start to disappear altogether, then you

just feel better. It also helped me loose 20kgs over the course of about

six months without even trying simply due to what I believe was improved

metabolism.

Dr. Brownstein also indicates that increased Iodine consumption results in

increased excretion of heavy metals like mercury and lead, though I do not

know whether this is the case as I did not specifically test before and

after levels of mercury excretion.

He also indicates that Iodine in much higher dosages than the RDA, e.g.

12,5mg – 50mg per day (versus an RDA of 150mcg, which he claims to be

totally inadequate) has several other positive effects, one of which is a

marked decrease in breast cancer risk and also the resolution of painful

breasts (one of my female friends was most impressed by this after taking

Iodoral for a while). He claims the average Japanese consumption is 12,5mg

due to their diet rich in sea products, like kelp which feature in many

Sushi dishes. Breast cancer in Japan is apparently much less prevalent than

in Western World and obesity is also rare.

Nevertheless, while this is in my non-professional opinion definitely a

worthwhile treatment option for many maladies or just to achieve better

energy and health, I do not think one should at all go to the extent of

abolishing DMSA/ALA chelation in favour of just Iodine, but rather just use

Iodine to help the process on.

Before however embarking on anything, please first order Dr.

Brownstein’s book on www.drbrownstein.com or find a doctor knowledgeable on

the topic – I can direct you if you are in South Africa. This is due to the

process being much enhanced and detoxification damage decreased if you

combine it with the right supplements, etc. And if you are going to do it,

I cannot stress the following enough: “GET A BOTTLE OF HIMALAYAN ROCK

SALT!!!” – some of the Bromide detoxification symptoms make you afraid that

you may not die soon and the very affordable salt (½ - 1 teaspoon dissolved

in water morning and evening) takes 90% of these symptoms away completely.

While this sounds exaggerated, this stuff (the salt) really made the

difference for me between being suicidal and coping quite reasonably while

on the high dosage Iodoral. Do not use table salt as table salt is highly

refined and may contain aluminium. However once most of the bromide (and

who knows what else) is excreted (four months in my case), the symptoms went

away and stayed away. The only remaining adverse effect is when I eat lots

of bread, like half a French loaf, I get a light skin irritation a day or so

later for a couple of days. I think this is due to the Bromide contained in

the dough (yes, they sometimes use the stuff as a flour improver, however

ludicrous it might sound) being chased out by the Iodine, where it would

normally just accumulate in your body.

All the best with your decision.

Here is Dr Brownstein's video on iodine being a chelator of mecury.

http://vitamincfoundation.org/videos/#BROWNSTEIN

This is only in 1 patient. He had 24 hour urine samples tested for

mercury before starting 50mg iodine a day... 1 day after starting the

iodine, and 30 days after starting the iodine. It showed very little

mercury excreted before...a very very high amount 1 day after starting

the iodine, and it was in the middle 30 days after starting the iodine.

I personally don't believe it chelates mercury ...but I do believe

that it does release mercury stored in the glands/organs. This can be

dangerous obviously if you are not a fast excreter.

Someone who I talked to on another forum, she started the high iodine

protocol while she still had fillings in, and at 24 years old she lost

a considerable amount of hair and its only starting to grow back now

that she got her amalgams removed and started chelating using DMSA

with Cutlers Protocol.

This is what Andy has to say on the topic. (I am quoting Andy

because it is difficult to pick his words out of the post at the link

below)

......

" It is completely discredited by current and existing data.

The knowledge of both research and basic physiology suggested by the

above discussion

also essentially guarantees the results are of no utility. "

.......

" I don't dispute there is a lot of benefit for many people in taking

adequate iodide, I simply

dispute that it increases mercury and lead clearance to a clinically

significant extent, or

helps clear it out of any relevant body compartment. I am correct in

that view, too, it isn't

a matter on which opinions may legitimately differ among any with

expertise.

I do sometimes suggest people use iodide, and am very supportive of

using it when people

tell me their doctor has prescribed it. "
