Guest guest
>>>It's been very similar with my grandparents - except that >>>the wunderkinds are my cousins who live in Canada!!! I suspect it >>>is really because my uncle is the favoured child - born years >>>after the older two and in *much* happier times. My siblings and I always used to think our maternal Granny favoured the other grandchildren, as every time we visited she was going on and on about how wonderful and clever they all were. This went on for years, until one day when I was about 15 I told my cousin how fed up we were. WHAT! she said, whenever WE go there she always brags about how fantastic YOU lot are - we don't even dream of aspiring to your level. We managed to have a laugh about it, but it did annoy me that she had been winding us all up for so long. With hindsight thouugh it was so typical of my Granny - always keeping people on edge. It all reminds me of a (brilliant) song by Alf Proysen which if you translated it would be called something like " Everyone has a cousin in Hampstead " (for Hampstead swap nearby town or village slightly posher than your own). Basically it's a tune about how every time you have achieved something, the cousin has done it just a smidgen better - from the way they were born, to their studies and jobs, and even in death. It's quite harsh, but as he was a sort of everyday life poet I guess what he was trying to say that you can't let it stop you from celebrating your own life. (Btw Alf Proysen was the one who wrote Mrs Pepperpot). Karina
