Hi --

The BEST place to get a beginner's feel for removing casein and gluten is the

book by Karyn Seroussi called " Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and PDD. " It

explains the theory behind how/why the diet works for some autistic children,

and gives you a good foundation of info to start from. Another book by

, called " Special Diets for Special Kids " is helpful too, and has a lot

of recipes if you are a make-it-from-scratch type.

Also, you might want to check out this website: www.gfcfdiet.com

and join the yahoo group called GFCFKids

Casein is found in milk and a lot of other dairy products like cheese,

yogurt, non-dairy creamer (!), etc. It can show up on food labels as whey,

caseinate, milk, and even under " natural flavors " (as can gluten actually).

Gluten is found in almost everything, unfortunately. It's in a lot of

processed foods (say, RiceARoni) as well as found in wheat, oats, barley and

rye.

The diet is easiest when you get back to basics and make fresh fruits,

vegetables and meats for starters. Then, as you learn what to look for in the

labels, you can start adding some other things. I found this has been the

easiest way to get parents started.

I am not at home for the next few days, we are househunting out of state

actually, but when I get back I would be happy to help you along with the

diet, we've been doing it for four years now and I attribute my son's amazing

progress to this diet.

I've done a little reseach. Casein is found in milk, but does this mean

all dairy products need to be eliminated from the child's diet? And is

gluten found in all grains? I'm a little confused. If anyone can shed

light on this issue, I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you,

Maggie

Casein and forms of it are present in all dairy products. Gluten is

present in wheat and oats.

Corn, rice, potato, soy are common substitutes. But many parents

chose to eliminate soy and corn.

I had put my son on a completely gluten and casein free diet...and

while I see a great deal of promise with it, and I've re-introduced

dairy and see no change in behavior.

go to www.gfcfdiet.com and read the part about starting the diet.

It's full of the info you need.
