Guest guest
I had a similar gap when DS3 was born - DS1 was 6 and 3/4 and DS2 was 4 and 3/4. DS1 took it all in his stride, but DS2 veered between being very loving and obviously hating having a baby around. He was in his Reception year as well and felt pushed out, even though he wasn't. His argument was that DS1 was a older brother, new baby was a younger brother, so what did that make him? Special was what he was usually told! It has settled down over time and strangely enough DS 3 is closer to DS2 in many ways. I think this is particularly because DS1 has Aspergers and ADHD and DS2 at least feels that DS3 is more like him and responds in the same way, whereas DS1 doesn't. When DD came along all three just thought her beautiful and we didn't have as many difficulties with DS3 as we did with DS2 in the same situation. But recently DS3 has started to take his frustrations out on his sister, especially since he has started school - some of it being tiredness and some of it trying out all those lovely things he sees the others doing at school!! Going back to an earlier thread, we're thinking about number 5 - our new house will have 6 bedrooms and it does seem a shame to let it go to waste!! My last 3 kids were 2.5 yrs apart and I think it worked out the best. My first four were 2.0 or less yrs apart, very tiring and the older one did tend to suffer more, also when they were 2.5 they were usually in playgroup so I had more time to settle in with the new arrival.
