An ex-colleague came in to visit us at work, with her 3 week old son. She is 19 and is breastfeeding happily - unusual if you compare it to the stats in the UK, which indicate the younger mothers are less likely to bfeed. I am constantly amazed at the number of women who I see breastfeeding (when compared to the UK). Breastfeeding is " almost " considered the norm here - and I must admit I see many more women breastfeeding than formula feeding. While birth is fairly medicalised here - breastfeeding seems to be well promoted. Debbie Slater Perth, WA Debbie Slater

Probably to do with the large number of lactation consultants as opposed to midwives overseeing breastfeeding post-birth. 'Melbourne's Child, the free monthly newsheet, did a survey on Melbourne's hospitals just before I left. Every hospital had a FT LC. And I never met a pregnant woman out there who wasn't planning to breastfeed. -- Sue
Guest guest
<<And I never met a pregnant woman out there who wasn't planning to breastfeed.>>> Sue my friend lives in Australia and when she was expecting her 1st child was pretty adamant she did not want to breastfeed. Her placenta however was a little funny about getting out so m/w suggested that she try to latch baby on (not knowing she intended to bottle feed) and it went that well that she just gave up on the idea of bottle-feeding and continued to feed Grace herself without many trouble at all until she was 15 months old.. She had her second child back in May and there was not talk what so ever about her not wanting to breast feed ;o) Lonnie Phoebe & Eloisa's mama & expecting a Christmas delivery... My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what you start. So far today, I have finished 2 bags of chips and a Chocolate cake. I feel better already.
