But it isn't 'caught' from someone with Chicken pox BTW - shingles is

dormant in your body once you have had CP and it will just appear one day -

not sure what the triggers are - maybe stress? BUT someone who has Shingles

can give another person CP. A friends father had shingles and gave the

friend CP - who was then hospitalised with it :( Unfortunately the father

died of complications (he already had cancer it wasn't the shingles that did

it!) and his son was too ill to attend the funeral - so it is a asty thing

to get as an adult.

What I would like to know is - if all my immediate family have had CP -

including me - then do my antibodies protect my bump? I assume the growing

baby can't be affected if I come into contact with CP?

I'm sure the baby is fairly well protected if you are Caroline. I had

chickenpox earlier this year at 27 weeks pregnant and it was not much fun.

My GPs were fantastic though and acted very quickly to help me get through

what is a really nasty disease as an adult. After having several injections

of antibodies, then anti-viral drugs once it actually started, I got over it

fast. I was concerned at all the things I was having to take, but the GP

said it's better for the baby that I take them, than actually going through

the illness untreated. I wasn't in the worst time of pregnancy to get CP

(first 20 weeks or close to delivery), but did wander if he'd be born with

CP " scars " ! He was fine though, but now I have no idea how that's affected

his immunity.

Having thought about your baby Caroline, I think he'd actually have to come

into contact with a person with CP to catch it, eg. share a cup or be

sneezed over, so inside you he should be very safe! We had contact with

someone two days before their spots came out (so a very infectious time)

about two years ago and none of us caught it then. I have no idea where the

contact came with the bout we had at the end of last year - we were

completely taken by surprise when DS1 started his spots on Christmas Day!!

Technically speaking yes - If you have had CP then you have the antibodies and

these are passed onto baby in utero. Also BF will protect after birth, it is

quite rare for a baby under 12 months to get CP BUT there are always exceptions

to the rule. I have had it twice as an infant and then at 17 with shingles and

both DDs have had it twice and the second time was far more aggressive.

I spoke to my HV about CP when DS3 was a couple of weeks old, as I

had said I would sit with my friends 2 as the eldest had CP and she

was out of food! and needed to do a food shop.

The HV said CP was spread by touch and a small completely BF baby

would be unlikely to catch it but it was still possible.

Her DH did catch it though and was pretty grotty, even though he had

spent time sleeping in the spare room and avoiding the children.

My eldest 2 got CP a few years ago when we were on holiday in France.

DS1 started it and was covered from head to toe in spots, DS2 got it

for his 1st birthday and had 3 spots. I actually took him down to

see the nurse to check out if it was CP. He was still BF at this

point and they (it took 3 nurses to decide it was CP) said he could

get it again as the dose was so mild, but as yet he has not. DS3

still has this pleasure to come.

I caught CP at the grand age of 15, just after my dad had died and

mum also had shingles. It was a great time in our house!

My DD got CP when she was 8 months and still being breastfed loads. I was

really surprised as I had it badly when I was 15 and thought there would be

pretty strong antibodies in my breastmilk. One of the exceptions to the rule

I guess! BTW she did get it mildy but did end up in hospital with

complications (really nast bacterial skin infection).
