Possibly the most useful thing I have learnt on this list was from a

former NCT Antenatal teacher who moved out to Singapore. Oldies will

remember Nicky, I'm sure.

She told us how to make a rice sock, an essential piece of equipment for

her life as a doula.

Take one sock (I use an old white cotton sports sock). 2/3 fill it with

UNCOOKED rice. Tie a knot in the end and use as you would the wheat

pillow i.e. heat in the microwave.

Steffi, my 4yo, takes one to bed with her occasionally. I only do it

for 1 minute if she's going to cuddle it.

I'm not sure what the position would be WRT to lavender - I guess you

could put a small sachet of the dried stuff inside if you wanted the

smell.

Definitely much cheaper than the ones you buy in the shops. Not as

pretty but you could make a covering for it or use a nice sock. I have

sometimes used a hair scrunchie to tie the end.

The sock shape sits well round the back of your neck etc too.

Add a few drops of lavender oil to the rice... it absorbs it and then

releases the smell etc when heated!

I have made posher variations on these out of fleece material (sew a

tube or cushion shape fill with rice)... add oils according to purpose

(ie anti travel sick, reviving relaxing etc...)

How do they (fleecey ones) cope with the microwave? I'm going to make some

wheat pillows for xmas presents, and thought I'd do an inner bag made from

cotton sheeting as I thought that would withstand the microwave better than

the poly/lycra glorious deep purple velvet I'm going to make them out of :)

But if the fleece doesn't catch fire in the microwave, I guess the velvet

wouldn't either...

I was thinking about these socks today and thought about making one

for Mum for Christmas and then I came back and Sue had posted the

details - mind reader or what!

I am interested in also making an anti travel sickness one for DS1 -

but what would be the oil to put in that?

well it hasn;t so far!! the longest I have done one for is 3 or 4 mins

(3 mins many times)

I had thought of doing inner bags if I mad ethem for pressies or

whatever, but TBH they have been " 5 minute makes " just for us -so I

haven't bothered

I use Ginger mandarin & peppermint.... all of which are good anti

nausea, use in any combo which smells good! Peppermint is very strong

and might be best used alone!! you really only need 2 or 3 drops... I

mix it in with the rice in a bowl before stuffing.

After reading all the messages on this I think I have solved my " What

to get everyone for Christmas " dilemma! I have lots of beautiful

fleece material which I make beany toys from, and now have another

idea.....the oils will make each one different and personal, great!

Thanks for the tip

Love

Ruth
