Oldies will remember Nicky, I'm sure. She told us how to make a rice sock, an essential piece of equipment for her life as a doula. Take one sock (I use an old white cotton sports sock). 2/3 fill it with UNCOOKED rice. Tie a knot in the end and use as you would the wheat pillow i.e. heat in the microwave. Steffi, my 4yo, takes one to bed with her occasionally. I only do it for 1 minute if she's going to cuddle it. I'm not sure what the position would be WRT to lavender - I guess you could put a small sachet of the dried stuff inside if you wanted the smell. Definitely much cheaper than the ones you buy in the shops. Not as pretty but you could make a covering for it or use a nice sock. I have sometimes used a hair scrunchie to tie the end. The sock shape sits well round the back of your neck etc too. -- Sue

Add a few drops of lavender oil to the rice... it absorbs it and then releases the smell etc when heated! I have made posher variations on these out of fleece material (sew a tube or cushion shape fill with rice)... add oils according to purpose (ie anti travel sick, reviving relaxing etc...) Guest guest
How do they (fleecey ones) cope with the microwave? I'm going to make some wheat pillows for xmas presents, and thought I'd do an inner bag made from cotton sheeting as I thought that would withstand the microwave better than the poly/lycra glorious deep purple velvet I'm going to make them out of But if the fleece doesn't catch fire in the microwave, I guess the velvet wouldn't either... I am interested in also making an anti travel sickness one for DS1 - but what would be the oil to put in that? Trisha SAHM to 3 boys

Peppermint is very strong and might be best used alone!! you really only need 2 or 3 drops... I mix it in with the rice in a bowl before stuffing. hth Angi
