Guest guest
DD2 (born 30 April 2000 and so just over 17 months old) seems to be ready for potty training. Since just after her first birthday she has been telling me when she has a dirty nappy immediately it happens. This has now progressed to telling me most of the time just before it happens so we get to the potty on time. If she is in cloth trainer pants or no pants at all she is able to tell me when she wants a wee sometimes a good minute before she wees. Eg, she will say " wee on potty " and then I will have to hunt it down, pull down her trousers and pull-ups (or whatever) AND find her a book (yes really!) before she will sit down and wee. Has this happened to anyone else? I thought babies did not get control of their bowel/bladder until at least 18 months/2 years old. DD2 has always been quite ahead, eg, lifting her head up and looking round at a few days old, rolling over at 10 weeks, commando crawling at 5 months. My question is should I go for it and put her in knickers? Or should I leave it a bit longer? She is getting to the stage now where she gets a right strop on if I try to put a nappy (as opposed to pull-ups/trainer pants) on her. HELP! One of the mums at Steffi's school told me last year that both her daughters were potty trained by 18mo. I'd give it a go if I were you. What have you got to lose? No-one stops their child's attempts at walking, talking, crawling, etc so why try to stop them being nappy-less? -- Sue

No personal experience, but I have a friend whose son was fully potty trained by 18 months, and he did it all himself, no parental pressure. Guest guest
One of the girls from my antenatal class from Phoebe was the same and she was using the potty during the day with no accidents from 17 months. She was the most obviously ready for training I have ever come across (told mummy need potty and would go) another " mum " from the class " trained " her daughter at 2 years (very competitive mum who ALWAYS have to have the " best " child) and it took 3 weeks before they had a wee in the potty and a further 4 months before she was reliable (though she said she was potty trained 4 weeks later when she would do like 1 wee a day in the potty).. Always amuses me how different these 2 girls were in this case and to me it shows that the 17 month was more than ready and that the 2 year old could have done with mummy leaving it for a couple of months and then trying.. (PS I want to tell you to go for it but if I do that means I have to take my own " advice " and go for it with Eloisa - 21 months - who is showing similar signs but I am still trying to recover from Phoebe's potty training Aug/Sep and I am 30 week pg..... - GOOD luck ;o) ) Lonnie Phoebe & Eloisa's mama & expecting a Christmas delivery... My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what you start. So far today, I have finished 2 bags of chips and a Chocolate cake. I feel better already. -----
Guest guest
I'd say go for it. DS was 2.5 when we started and at nearly 4, I still wouldn't say he was reliable (I kick myself if I go out without spare clothes). Perfectly capable, but not reliable. We're still on " rewards " for 4 dry days in a row. We had 8 dry days at the start of September and then very hit and miss until this week when we're now on day 5. Guest guest
I'd go for it as well.... I have always left mine til the last minute on grounds that it would minimise the accidents and thus the child feeling a failure (also depends on how you handle the accidents of course) whilst I was feeling smug that he was very reliable once potty trained at 2 3/4 - however we have had a lot of accidents in the past fortnight (which of course is due to our discussing the subject on this list) so not quite as smug Caro
