Ruth - bad luck missing DH last night; made me wonder though, what DH

calls me (I think it's " It's me " !!) - I don't actually think he

addresses me by name!! He doesn't call me darling which is perhaps

because that's what I call the children and I feel weird when I call

him that! What do other peoples husbands call them? (the printeable

versions only, please, this is a family list...)

Pog.

My Dad only ever calls my Mum " Love " . I think this is because he's

forgotten her name!

my poor grandad was never called by his real name (Len) - my Grandma always

called him either 'Dad' or 'Grandad' in company.

DH refuses to let me print what he calls me - but it has something to do

with being short and round! At the moment I am 'Bumps' due to the current

very round tum!

Sometimes darling but most frequently RB or Bear. He on the other hand is

either Ratty, Bear, or when I'm cross and TT by my father 'cos it

irritates the hell out of him

dw and I call each other a mixture of pet names (love, my love, darling sweetie

etc etc) and occaisionally jim and deb (respectively). Neither of us ever call

one another by full names. We also use short term rhyming slang type nicknames

usually based on some recent event or activity (eg I am known as helmutt (as in

bicycle helm*e*t)).

I always called my parents by their first names, which they claim wasn't

anything they planned, so I guess they must have used these fairly regularly in

front of us kids. I remember getting into *big* trouble with a primary teacher

for putting *liz* into a mothers day card instead of *mummy*.

Dw's parents called one another mum and Dad when dw was small but now seem to

call one another by first names in company.

I always call DH and he usually remembers I am Trisha! I always

call my mum mum! but I never know what to call Dh's mum (after 15

years of marriage) and either don't call her anything or call her

. DH always calls my mum Betty (she asked him to).

DS1 calls me mum or mummy depending on whether he wants something or

not. DS2 always calls me Mum.

My friends daughter always calls me Mummy-Trisha which always draws

some attention to us as she is Asian and I am blonde and white!

I call DH '' very rarely 'Steve' although lots of his friends and his

parents call him Steve. I only use Steve if I'm cross!! Apart from that I rely

on the standby of 'Honey' - which I call almost everyone as I am hopeless at

names and find that Honey offends less than getting the name totally wrong.

DH calls me , (he called my Vicky once but has never repeated that

mistake!), Toria, Mrs. B (don't ask me I have no idea why), and 'Doreen'.

I call my MIL Josiane, but only because I have heard my BIL's wife

call her that, she has never given me any indication of what to call

ehr. Oh, and I had to use the same source to know if I should call her

'vous' or 'tu' which is vital information in French. I had called her

'vous' up to that point and was glad to know it was the right one. My

mom asked is to call her Mom or Alice, or both, whatever.

I think when I'm a MIL, I will ask to be called 'Your Highness' ;)

Oh, and the original topic: we call each other 'baby' pretty

frequently, I also call him honey and sweetie. We sometimes call each

other Daddy and Mama, but not often and only for Calvin's benefit or

when joking about something to do with him. We only use our real names

if we're trying to get each other's attention in the park or wherever.

Is 'vous' the right way to address your MIL then?

I thought that it would have been 'tu' but then again my French is

cr*p unless it involves food or hotels!

It depends on the MIL. Mine is 'vous', and she calls me 'tu', but I

know people who use 'tu' with their MIL. The odd thing is that some of

MIL's friends want me to call them 'tu' so it's a bit odd, but boils

down to personal choice.

Essentially, for us *étrangers* speaking French, you call everyone

older than you, everyone who is an adult, and anyone that you don't

know well 'vous' until they ask you to change. Better safe than sorry.

(So it would always be 'vous' in a restaurant or hotel :))

It's easy in our family as DH's mum is known by all family

members as 'Moose' (her real name is Olive) - our asian

relatives (my BIL is Kenyan Asian) think it really is her name -

she always gets cards addressed to Mrs Moose Pearce from

them. DH calls her 'Finest Moose of the Realm' when he's being

nice to her!

Strange family i married into! Incidentally i spent saturday night

with BIL's family having a meal at the Bombay Brasserie - they

are so incredibly glamorous! I felt a right frump in comparison!

Does he have a lovely voice?

I met a man in a pub many years ago who was similar background and his

voice was the most beautiful thing I have ever listened too.

My DH has always called me " Darling " or " Ruth " in public, but we

usually call each other " Gorgeous " in private! Occasionally he calls

me " Gorgeous-ness-skis " if he wants me to do something - like go and

get the coffee at 9pm! We have always made up words for affectionate

names, including our much missed Spaniel " Peru " (PEter/RUth), who

more often than not got called " Scooby Dooby Dooooooo!! " and was

referred to as " Woofty-Poofty " , she was totally mad but lovely LOL!

Our son is known as " Treasure Island " or just " Treasure " , and our

Rabbit (Bunny) and Guinea-Pig (Bengo) are known as " The Boys "

collectively. I hadn't thought about it before, but we don't use ANY

real names much in this house!

DH phoned me at 2.30 this afternoon, 5.30 his time. He was worried

about *ME* because we hadn't been in when he phoned yesterday. We

will both be grey by the time he gets home!

DS has had a really good week so far, the bullying has stopped, the

Learning Support has kicked in at school and he's blossoming into the

boy we had last term - confident, happy, smiling, and begging to be

allowed to stay at school for even longer! (8.40am start, 6pm finish

after Prep, Tea and Stay & Play in the " Den " ). He's gone up a stage

in reading books, and knows all his spellings and the 7X table ready

for his test tomorrow. He even got an Academic Credit at his Drum

Lesson today! What a difference a few weeks can make....

Much happier at the moment - thanks for all your thoughts, they're

working!

Love Ruth

I've really enjoyed these posts, been sitting here grinning and

laughing...some of the names are so lovely and affectionate without

being oversweet

My grandmother used to refer to her husband as YF ( " Your Father " ) much

of the time and it stuck, everyone called him YF in the end, except

when they were calling him 'Bulgy'. ahem... I suppose if your

husband's first name is Hickman it's pretty inevitable that another

name would be used. I think HWL was another name (initials)

Caro

>

I like this proper names for parents - (jim etc) - a very good

friend has always called

her parents and Liza and has a good working relationship with

them now ( " respect " !!!) - and I like it when the children call us by

name - now DS has started calling me Caro this week (thinks it gets

more reaction from the computer) I am going to encourage

it....otherwise am 'Ma' from DD which I like...

My mother didn't like Grannie so now has got stuck with Berber (gold

teeth) or Budget (fridge) and father is his initials which I only

started as a joke as I thought the initials would irritate him, again

has stuck...(what a nice daughter) and that's what DH calls them too

(well, everyone, now including some of their friends call her

Budget!!)

Gethyn calls me: darling, Gwenni and Sweet Cheeks, he reserves for

when he's serious about something. He also calls me many other things that

come to his mind at the time (can't think of any of them at the moment).

Gethyn calls Mari: ' Minelli Mendosa Cream Cheese' (as one name!) and

is working on a long name for 'Dear Dear Mrs Nia'. we call 'Aly' and

he used to be 'Pookie Snackenburger' or 'Bod'.

My father calls my mother 'Queen of Sheeba' and he calls me 'Jelly Baby'.

Yes - his accent is nice. He came over from Kenya in the seventies as a

student (where he met SIL) so his english is very good. He spends loads of

time in America (he was the one stuck in NYC for a week) so he has a slight

US twinge as well.
