What have most people noticed as first signs of pregnancy? How many

people have known they were pregnant before period was due? How many

people have not realised until weeks or months later?

I had a friend who went to the ROyal Marsden having been referred by

her doctor, so of course she was pretty worried, only to be told that

she was six months pregnant! She had a 20 yo and an 18 yo - I thought

it was good that she went on and had another baby afterwards to keep

No 3 company...

I always knew before period was due and in face tested positive 3 days

before period was due with both DD and DS...

Has to be swollen tender breasts.

and I knew the 3rd pregancy before my period was due. Whispered to

DH between courses as a New Years Eve dinner party that I thought I

might be pregnant.

First preg I didn't know for 11 weeks, and then only cos a friend made

me do a test cos I was eating so much. But second time round I knew

within a WEEK! sore boobs mainly, but weeing all the time and

everything smelling strong also added to my suspicions! oh also

sleeping at a moments notice.

Funny how each is so different!

Angi told me on the day that my period was due that I was pregnant -

apparently because I looked pregnant!

DS1 was only 5 months old and I felt soooo tired. After getting back

from swimming and feeling absolutely shattered I thought " I haven't

felt this tired since I was first pregnant " ...and the penny dropped!

My periods had not returned (no surprise as I was breast feeding) and

I had assumed I was not very fertile, as we had tried for over a year,

and had one miscarriage, to find I was pregnant with DS1.

I was what - 8 -9 weeks gone by then? Which TBH was such a relief as I

had felt such anxiety with the first pregnancy. The second one just

seemed to fly past.

I knew I was pg with Mari before my period was due, I was camping in France

and kept needing to use those 'hole in the floor' loos which I normally

avoid ;) plus my boobs were really tender and I was feeling nauseous on the

ferry.

I didn't realise I was pg with Nia until I had the positive test when my

period was 8 days overdue, but then the nausea when travelling in the car

suddenly made sense - silly me thought it was car sickness which I don't

normally get :)

But more importantly - are you trying to tell us something? ;)

Caro, I've done it both ways -

With DS1 I had obvious pregnancy symptoms within 4 days of

unprotected sex, mainly my boobs were tender and suddenly full of

blood vessels, food tasted funny, and I felt 'different'.

With DS2 I went to my GP with cystitis, to be told, " of course, being

pregnant will make it feel different. " I immediately denied the

pregnancy, so he got out the fetal stethoscope and proved his point -

I was 18 weeks, and completely unsuspecting... DH and I were thrilled.

With DS3 I didn't realize until no period, but it was a planned

pregnancy, so there was a nice bubble of excitment.

With DD we were using natural family planning and I ovulated far

earlier than ever before, so I had the choice of whether to use

emergency contraception and chose not, so assumed I was pregnant

immediately.

Funnily enough it was DS2's pregnancy which I only knew about for 22

weeks, which seemed to last the longest, by 34 weeks I was desperate

for him to be born.

Gosh that's quite an assumption, that you get pregnant each time you

have unprotected sex! Takes me back to my pre-first-baby days when,

as a newly wed I understood fertility like this: If you were fertile,

you got pregnant if you had unprotected sex. If you were barren, you

didn't. Since it took us THREE WHOLE MONTHS of bonking like rabbits

to actually conceive LOL, and each of those three periods was

accompanied by hysterical sobbing on my part, I soon learned that it

doesn't always just happen! And since I had 8 kids, I can hardly

consider myself barren!

I knew almost straight away with DD2 by sense of smell/taste. I opened

a mail order packet containing a port-a-potty for DD1 - the smell of

the insert bags turned my stomach and that same day I fancied, ate, and

enjoyed a KFC meal - for the first and last time ever.

I was certain with Eloisa before my period was due and tested 2 days before and

I got the positive line.. This time around I also thought that I was pregnant

and tested 4 days before period was due got a negative then waited until day

period was due and got the positive..

Different with Phoebe as I had just had a m/c and thought the reason I was

feeling cr** and worn out and had no period was because of m/c (I had been told

this could happen) so it was not until I was doing the dishes at 6 weeks pg and

I felt like throwing up by the smell of the dishes that I decided to test (just

to make to convince myself that I was not you understand <G>).. I was charting

at the time and looking back on my chart it is actually pretty clear when I

ovulated and Phoebe was conceived at 8 days before ovulation so a stubborn

little one from word go ;o)..

The signs with all 3 have been a VERY heightened smell and I have problems doing

the dishes from very early on (like 1 weeks past ovulation) sore breasts and I

go off caffeine..

My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what you

start.

So far today, I have finished 2 bags of chips and a Chocolate cake.

I feel better already.

But it's how it works for some of us. Each of my 5 pregnancies has immediately

followed a decision to stop using contraception, making me extremely grateful

that I never took risks when I *didn't* want to be pregnant.

I knew I was pg at 4 weeks + 1 day because my cycle never shifts by more

than a day. I started to get evening nausea at 6 or 7 weeks I think - I had

one awful lie on the sofa groaning evening and was sick the next morning,

then for about 3 or 4 weeks felt queasy every evening between 5 and 7 but

handled it by always having bottle of Volvic plus digestives to hand and

being careful about what I cooked. I didn't have any of those tender boobs

things, no change to taste/smell (although I did lose my wine tasting skills

somewhat), no cravings or aversions, occasional cramp but only about 3 or 4

attacks, only 21 lb gain in mass, no swollen ankles till after the epidural

and drip, one psd scare (but it was just a twinge), no heartburn, no trouble

sleeping, a bit of backache, some tired days - I had a really easy time!

Oh - no, other problem was with rare steak. Very sick after that and

queasy after medium steak.

Me too Lynda, and I'm aware how fortunate we are compared to some people who

take so long, months or years sometimes, to conceive. I knew as soon as

first missed period with DS1 and 2, but knew straightaway with DS3. I

suppose I was aware of a familiar feeling, slight queasyness and a strange

thought that we were complete as a family and didn't want this extra baby.

Very odd but I had it with each of the children and yet they were all

planned and very much wanted. Obviously it didn't last and I only had the

thought for about a week, but it's how I knew I was pregnant last time.

I was once married to an infertile man and had six years of thinking I

was barren, so can totally relate to periods accompanied by

precipitation - in fact I think the whole episode has left me with a

deeply irresponsible attitude towards conception despite DH's sperm

having outboard motors on that can also negotiate condoms. (2 condom

pgs, sadly both failed but later on so nothing to do with the

barriers)

Has anyone seen that card that has one fast-track sperm travelling up

to the sun-like egg, saying to the others following him, 'so long,

guys!' ? (I think with outboard motor on) I've always thought it

might be nice to give one of those to one's DH when breaking the

boyful (typo - joyful) news

Of course, that whole disappointment scenario doesn't help the

conception at all as many previously infertile couples will attest.

At one point I knew 10 'infertile' couples - of which 9 had managed to

conceive after about five years; the only ones left were orthodox

Jewish and even they managed it after ten years and with a bit of

help. I did often wonder Ruthie, though, whether she was an early

ovulater like me, and whether she could have got dispensation to go

into action earlier in her cycle than the rules would normally allow,

in order to conceive? But never did manage to ask her being much more

inhibited in those days.

One of my 'infertile' friends had a test tube boy but didn't want to

know the sex in advance, which was written all over her notes.

Towards end of pg midwife was examining the bumpety bump and the way

the midwife was muttering at him left her in no doubt that she was in

fact carrying a boy! " Move over you little so and so " etc!

That wasn't quite the assumption I made Ruthie. We'd been using nfp

for five years, so I'd had plenty of unprotected sex in that time. I

just had never ovulated 36 hours later. It just seemed a fair

assumption to make at the time. ;-)

not stand their food. I put it down to the fat back then..

I knew I was pregnant the morning after the night before!!

DH had just come home from a stint at sea, and we went out for a meal

to celebrate. When we got home, we never even made it under the

duvet (most unusual for us!!) and next morning my boobs were so

painful I could hardly walk! Considering he was meant to be sterile

it wasn't surprising that he didn't believe me - a test a few days

later showed it was true!! And yes, DS does look exactly like DH....!

It was back on the pill for me...

Same here - apart from the month before I conceived no. 3 when I

thought I was pregnant but was not. Might well have been a v. early

miscarriage though as had tender boobs, metallic taste etc.

That happened to me too the month before I conceived Bethany. I was positive

I was pregnant - v swollen boobs etc, but then had an *early* (by a couple

of days I think) , but extremely heavy period - I've always wondered if it

was a very early miscarriage...

The others I've always known before I even got my period. Never have the

patience to wait to test!

With my first DS I had no symptoms until after the test was positive at 6

weeks (We had been trying for 3 mnths and I had spent a fortune on pregnancy

tests so I waited this time) and then I went off cooking smells, lots of

nausea, all day sickness and tiredness (as someone else mentioned fell asleep

at the drop of a hat). At around 28 weeks nausea stopped but 32 weeks

heartburn began. had a craving for chocolate peanuts and raisins.

With DD1 I wasn't convinced until the +ve test as my periods were erratic.

Nausea, less morning sickness but more heartburn Craving for cheese on toast

(never eaten cheese before). Tiredness sleeping during 10 mnth olds daytime

nap.

DD2 knew when concieved as DH only home for 1 weekend and tests were more

accurate so tested on day period due, metallic taste overwhelming if I

remember. Even less nausea but more heartburn. Craving for drinking oxo

cubes. No sleeping as had 2 toddlers to look after

DD3 also found out day period was due no sickness, no nausea heartburn very

bad from 20 weeks but otherwise very well no craving that I can remember.

DD4 didn't even occur to me that I was pregnant until I had felt nauseous

with the metallic taste for three days on the run. On the 3rd day I thought

the last time I felt like this I was pregnant, and a quick calculation got me

worried. A trip to the chemist confirmed things and I turned out to be 10

weeks. Those 3 days were the only symptoms I got apart from the now

obligatory heartburn.
