Guest guest
Hello all, Just wanted to introduce myself. I am the daddy of an eight year old daughter, Micki, that was recently diagnosed with Autism and Mental Retardation. It took us YEARS to get this diagnosis, which we agree with. I cannot believe how much pushing and pulling and yelling we had to do to get to where we are now. The diagnosis we had before was Cerebral Palsy. Her neuro left it at that, but said that she is a puzzle that is not put together yet. Anyway we have got more done in the past month than we had since we adopted her four years ago. We got an appointment with the JFK Center for Autism in Denver. (We live in Colorado Springs) They gave us the results a lot quicker than normal and got us in touch with their Developmental Peditician. We went to see him because of some raging and behavioral problems. He is going to try Micki on Risperdal and I have read a lot on this and am really looking forward to trying it. My wife and I are about at the end of our ropes. Micki's rages have been really bad lately. They usually last at least 30 minutes and have gone on for as much as a couple hours. It makes it really hard to get sitters even if it is just grandma. With the Resperdal I have no problem with the weight gain as Micki has grown 4 or 5 inches in the past year and has not gained any weight. She is constant movement, even when she is asleep. Anyway, if you have gotten this far let me ask a question. Micki has problems with meds. With her anti-seizure meds we have tried sprinkles, liquid and chewables. Chewables seem to work best, with bribes. I know Resperdal does not come in chews, does anyone know how well the tablets go if they are chewed? Thanks Wilhelm Mickisdaddy
Guest guest
> I know Resperdal does not come in chews, does anyone know > how well the tablets go if they are chewed? > Risperdal is really nasty tasting stuff, from what I can see...we dissolve it in water and add in a bit of orange juice to get my son (9 yr old with Childhood Disintegrative Disorder) to take it....that seems to cover the taste best. It does come in a liquid, but doesn't have good success with those if they are too syrupy. Raena

Guest guest
Hi ! Welcome to our extended family! My boys, both on the spectrum, will take meds in a spoonful of applesauce. If she doesn't eat applesauce, try anything with a thicker texture that doesn't need chewed up. My boys are on something similar to what your trying Micki on and they are doing so much better! My youngest is the one who would tantrum and get aggressive and this is the only type med we've found that helps him. He still may have to try an antidepressant with it to help him a bit more with his frustration level, but at least he is no longer agressive and angry over everything. Talk to you soon! Guest guest
Hi . I just wanted to welcome you and Micki to the group. I haven't been here all that long but it's been a great source of support and encouragement for me. Evan isn't on any meds for anything related to the ASD yet but, because of his health problems, I do have lots of experience with meds. With pills that are not chewable, I always crushed them up and disolved them in a liquid or added them to something like applesauce or pudding or anything like that....preferably something with a fairly strong flavor so that it can mask (if that's possible) the taste of the pill. Love, prayers and heart hugs, Debbie (GA), Mom to Evan (4.5 y/o with ToF, RBBB, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asthma); (now a whole year old and HH and NT?); and my 3 angel babies whom I will finally see when God says it's time! 9:1-3 ============================================================ Date: 2003/05/08 Thu PM 02:10:20 EDT To: parenting_autism Subject: New to the group (daughter newly diagnosed) ============================================================

Guest guest
Welcome My I have a 12 yo daughter taking risperdal right now. She's gained 40 lbs since December and we're going to be removing her from it. Although weight isn't an issue at this time, it may become one in the future. I hope for her sake it's not. They had put Alyx on a new med that was supposed to stop her rapid weight gain, but instead of enhancing the effects of meds, it cancelled them off and I took her off of it. I have a 2.5 yo son who is on the GFCF diet and doing marvelous. As much of a skeptic as I was about the diet *ask anyone here*, I must conceed that the diet is the best thing that has happened to him. Maybe it is something you could look into. You're close to me. I'm from Kansas. We're really glad to have another father join our group! If anything, you'll get a great deal of support for your daughter's rages, as well as a place to share the joys of accomplishment. Welcome again. Hang in there, it's all going to work out. You're in the RIGHT PLACE. > Hello all, > > Just wanted to introduce myself. I am the daddy of an eight year old > daughter, Micki, that was recently diagnosed with Autism and Mental > Retardation. Guest guest
Welcome to the group, . My daughter Ebony takes risperdal as well and it was a godsend. Truly changed our lives. It stabalized her moods A LOT! It also was a real help with sleep issues. As long as you don't have weight issues, this could really help your daughter. I hope you see improvement right away. We have a horrible time getting meds into Ebony. The only thing that works for us is to put it into her cup. She still uses sippy cups. We use the liquid risperdal. I know some people say it tastes bad but Ebony drinks it down really well. She has more trouble with pills or chewables that I crush because no matter how well you crush them the drink is grittier with that stuff in it. We mix it with some fruit punch sugar free kool-aid. I think the taste of that is strong enough to hide the risperdal taste. Good luck to you and keep us posted on how that works for you. I've got my fingers crossed for you guys. Guest guest
> I have been meaning to ask, how did Putter get the nickname Putter? > Lou had a friend named Xavier (it is HA-vee-air, Zay-vee-yur) who was nicknamed Ox. He wanted to use Ox as a nickname. In my experience, planned nicknames do not work (we planned to call Enrique Quique, the standard Spanish nickname for Enrique, and we called him Bunny instead), but we called him Ox for a few weeks. Then I called him Oxy, then things like Oxytocin and Oxymoron, but finally settled, for a while, on Oxy-poo. That turned into Putti (like the plural of the little Italian cherubs in paintings), and that lasted about a year. Then started calling him Putt-Putt, partly from Putt Putt miniature golf and partly because he did indeed Putt around. I changed that into Putter because he puttered with stuff until it broke. And that is the history of his name. Salli
