Guest guest
rowan has a behaviour we just can't get a handle on these days. he has always been a hand-flapping finger-flicker but it has gotten much worse. not only does he do it more often - (i am thinking 25% of his waking hours he is flicking) he is now holding his breath whilst flicking! he'll be flicking away and next thing you know his face is purple! like i said, we need help. rowan's new OT is doing her best but she is young and new - this is her first job. she can't come up with any viable solutions - anyone???? i should say i am pretty sure it is a visual stim - i am no expert but he does flick in front of his eyes and it would appear he is looking at things through his fingers while they flick. please help! Guest guest
Sounds like a visual stim to me. Try getting him a top to spin that has a pattern on it like an optical illusion. Maybe that will distract his attention from his fingers? Sue
Guest guest
Would he like a view finder or a kaliedoscope? Something he could look through and also hold as a safety object? Their recommendation with a child that breath holds is to blow in their face. I know, I can see the autistic melt down with that one. : / Don't know if that will work or not. Because was having a seizure and not breath holding, blowing in his face always sent him into a deeper seizure. (should have seen the look on the smart ass nurse's face when she insisted on trying this and did exactly what I told her he'd do. Scared her so bad she ran out of the room.) Sorry I'm not any more help than that. Tina

They sometimes have small kaleidescopes there as party favors. 's we got from Dairy Queen in a kids meal.
