Guest guest
I've got a huge pumpkin - how do I create a mask out of it?? Cut off a lid and then dig it out? Would quite like to be able to use the pumpkin content afterwards? Got to do it this evening... We never had Halloween in Norway when I was young... Guest guest
PS You know what I mean - not a mask really, but a thing with a face on (and candle inside?). > I've got a huge pumpkin - how do I create a mask out of it?? > Cut off a lid and then dig it out? Guest guest
>I've got a huge pumpkin - how do I create a mask out of it?? I've just been doing this myself! Cut off the top. Scoop out the seeds (save them - you can roast them and eat them. Supposed to be good for cystitis I've heard). To get the flesh out I use a sharp knife and a spoon - I kind of slash randomly/in a criss-cross pattern inside and then use a spoon to scoop it out. Be careful you don't scoop it too thin though. I'm having problems loading this page but my sis sent it to me as she knows I like this sort of thing: http://www.angelfire.com/or2/lori/halloween.html -- Sue

For the purposes of doing a lantern, you don't need to scrape away a great deal - worth leaving yourself a couple of cms to avoid poking through the skin where you don't want to. At Schloss Vaudin, DH does lovely pumpkins, but he takes good care to ensure I am not supplied with more pulp than is required for *one* pumpkin pie. (It got to the stage years ago where friends avoided me round Hallowe'een!) -- jennifer@... Vaudin
Guest guest
Using a sharp knife cut a lid out at the stalk end make it quite large. Scoop out seeds with a strong spoon (I've bent a couple over the years!) scoop out as much flesh as you can save that for soup etc. On the out side draw the the face in felt tip cat like eyes etc and teeth then carve out with the sharp knife. Might take a bit of time to scoop out as the flesh if tougher than you would think. Have fun use a tea light Oh yes make the teeth/ out wide enough to light the candle through so you are not trying to put a lit candle into the pumpkin. That way leads to burnt paws. Basically mix with salt and melted butter and put on a greased oven tray. Cook at 200 F (what's that in C - about 100?) for 45mins. I'm sure they'd be very tasty done that way but not overly healthy!! -- Sue
Guest guest
I rather liked a cop-out I saw on an American calendar today, calling 31st Oct Pumpkin Day... I love pumpkin soup.. Guest guest
Pumpkin seeds are supposed to be very good for prostate problems. I buy them from the health food shop for DH. Ruthie
Guest guest
Jack O’Lantern is what it’s called. I just drew a face on mine, as I got it only yesterday and would like to eat the whole thing Hope it went well, Karina. > Cook at 200 F (what's that in C - about >100?) for 45mins. Yes (I had to look it up, though), so rather low temperature. >I'm sure they'd be very tasty done that way but not overly >healthy!! And roasted nuts are *supposed* to be healthy? >I rather liked a cop-out I saw on an American calendar >today, calling >31st Oct Pumpkin Day... Seriously??? LOL! Sadly Phyllis I am not supposed to be doing unhealthy this week having racked up half a dozen takeaways/meals out in less than a fortnight and being 8lbs from my Xmas goal weight with (I think) 8 weeks to go. As you may have seen later I did roast the seeds and they are delicious. So delicious that I keep going back for handfuls. I may have to cut my losses (minimise my potential gains??? ;-) ) and throw them in the compost bin pronto. We eat a lot of pumpkin/squash though (DH being a Kiwi gets v upset that it's only in the shops for a couple of weeks at this time of year) so after my goal is reached, I'll dig into the archives and find the instructions for roasting seeds again :-)))) -- Sue
