Guest guest
I received this response to my editorial. It was just what I needed today (after Kep whipped the car door open while we were racing down the road). Amy >I saw your letter in last night's Gazette, and I just wanted to tell >you there is hope for your son. They didn't call it that then, they said I was >perceptually handicapped. > >I am now 47 years old, I own my own home, I work full-time in >pharmaceutical research, and I am back in school working on a degree. >It was a long, hard struggle. I still don't quite fit in, but is >fitting in all that important? Some times it is better NOT to fit in. >Tell your son he is special and that he is worth something and that >what others may consider a disability may in the end turn out to be a >gift. It was just what I needed today (after Kep whipped the car door open while we were racing down the road). > Amy ACK!!! (((hugs))) did that several times a couple summers ago. She started having anxiety attacks and trying to get out of the car no matter where I was driving or how fast. I thought I'd have a heart attack before she got over it. > >Tell your son he is special and that he is worth something and that > >what others may consider a disability may in the end turn out to be a gift. She said that at 8 years old she scored a 57 on her IQ tests. She was a very destructive child. Her mother refused to give up on her even though the doctors recommended institutionalizing her. She's now 31. When I met her she was working as a freelance journalist. When two of the newspapers she worked for went under, she had to find another job. She did. As the assistant to a bank manager (corporate level). When the manager was promoted, she was promoted to his job. She now works at a very high paying job (with 3 assistants under her) for one of the biggest banks in Australia. She's happily married, doesn't want kids and is one of my closest friends in the world. So while I would LOVE for my son to be doing better in school/life right now, I'm not giving up on his future. One day at a time....one day at a time... Tina
