Next Saturday is 's birthday. My parents are giving him an X-box which

he has long wanted. I planned to get him a game to go with it since it is not

much good having an X-box and no games.

maintains a useful wishlist on Amazon.com. I told him some time ago to

be sure to include anything he was interested in, even games from other systems.

But modest did not do that. All the games listed were for Gamecube

and PC.

Well, Enrique knows all the games (and can instantly tell you how highly rated

they are by Game Informer, his favorite magazine) so naturally I turned to him.

Enrique did not want an X-box. He says there are no good games for it yet. He

went on, " Now that Microsoft bought out Rare [a favorite game company] the X-box

should be getting some good games, but Rare is so slow that it will take a

while. I can't see why we should buy an X-box before there are any decent

games. Any good games that an X-box has now are also available on Gamecube and

Playstation 2. So I don't know why we should get an X-box and not a PS2 "

Well, perhaps because it is 's birthday and that is what

wants?

At any rate, I was not surprised that Enrique looked disapproving when I asked

him about a game for . " What game do you think he would want? I know

there was one he mentioned last time we talked about an X-box, but I can't

remember what it was called. "

Enrique looked still more disapproving. " He would want Halo, " he told me

grimly. Halo did not sound familiar to me, but Enrique really knows his games

so even if it is not the game that wanted, it should still be a good

game.

We drove to the store the next day and I bought Halo. Enrique walked in

disapproving silence out of the store with me. As we got into the car, he said,

" I just don't know why you'd buy him a game that's rated M. "

Huh? " I didn't know it was rated M? " " Well, didn't you look? "

No, I didn't. Neither he nor would play a game rated M.

would not ask for a game rated M. I had thought it sounded unfamiliar. I just

assumed that Enrique would give me an appropriate game that would

want.

But I didn't ask for an appropriate game. I just assumed. And I asked Enrique

what game would want and, to Enrique's mind, Halo is the only decent

game that is an exclusive for X-box and therefore would naturally want

it even if he would not want to play an M-rated game. Enrique, for instance,

would not play Grand Theft Auto Vice City, because it is an amoral game, but it

has insanely high ratings from everyone who has played it so naturally he would

WANT it.

We drove home in gloomy silence.

Why the heck couldn't he have told me what he thought BEFORE I bought the game.

Now I will probably have to take it back, boo, hiss.
