Guest guest
This is the letter in full, they changed a few words:- I am writing in response to an article by Judy Finnegan in todays (Saturday Nov 3rd) issue ot the Daily Express. I am outraged by her one sided view of the NCT. The NCT is a charity and cannot afford such bad publicity particulraly when it is totally inaccurate and one sided. I am sorry Judy experienced feelings of guilt and humiliation surrounding childbirth and early motherhood, but assure readers that no one can make you feel guilty apart from yourself. I am a member of NCT and am proud to say that during childbirth I had the works, including an epidural. I was fortunate enough to be able to breastfeed, but gave up after 6 mths to bottle feed. I have never been made to feel a failure by any member of the NCT, or been looked down on because I chose to bottle feed, so I could return to work. The article is totally unbalanced and does nothing to inform readers of all the good the NCT does. Without the NCT, women would still be made to have enemas and pubic shaves before childbirth, something which I am sure most of us are glad has been abolished. The NCT provides support for new mothers and mothers to be. They arrange local get togethers for mothers (and fathers) so that people can share their worries, concerns or just make friends. They offer support to people suffering from post natal depression, people who may have lost a child, suffered a miscarriage, or even someone desperate to breastfeed, but finding it difficult. Support is always available. The NCT is about supporting womwn to get the birth experience that they want. It is about offering all the options so that a woman can actually make an informed CHOICE, which is not the same as being forced into a drug free labour. Judy has got it wrong and has obviously misunderstood what the NCT is all about. The NCT would never " brainwash " a member to resist medical intervention, thats just ludicrous and completely slanderous. This article is a complete fabrication of facts, and has nothing to do with the NCT's views or opinions, more to do with Judys feelings of inadequacy, and having a pop at an obvious target. Yours faithfully, Calvert Mum to Rohan (8 months) With thanks to gas & air, a tens machine, and a bloody good epidural!
