Has anyone got a foolproof biscuit recipe?

I need the kind of dough that you can give it to kids so they can roll

it out, use shape cutters, bung it on a tray, into the oven then

decorate and eat the cooked biscuits later.

If you have Nigella's Domestic Goddess book, the biscuit recipe in the

children's chapter is very good. If you don't have it, I'll get off my

lazy backside and dig it out and post it!! :)

Please do dig it out and post it, Vicki! I have just bought a load of

Xmas cookie cutters and DD1 is dying to try them out but my cookbooks

are in the attic (DH is " renovating " the utility room!) at the mo.

TIA

OK, here goes:

Butter cut-out biscuits:

175g soft unsalted butter

200g caster sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

400g plain flour (she recommends italian 00)

1tsp baking powder

1tsp salt

300g icing sugar, sieved, and food colourings

biscuit cutters

2 baking sheets, greased or lined

Preheat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4.

Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and moving towards

moussiness, then beat in the eggs and vanilla. In another bowl, combine

the flour, baking powder and salt [DS does this bit!]. Add the dry

ingredients to the butter and eggs, and mix gently but surely. If you

think the finished mixture is too sticky to be rolled out, add more flour,

but do so sparingly as too much will make the dough tough. Halve the

dough, form into fat discs, wrap each half in clingfilm and rest in teh

fridge for at least 1 hour. Sprinkle a suitable surface with flour, place

a disc of dough on it (not taking out the other half until you've finished

with the half)[bossy!] and sprinkle a little more flour on top of

that. Then roll it out ot a thickness of about 1/2 cm. Cut into shapes,

dipping the cutter into flour as you go, and place the biscuits on a baking

sheet.

Bake for 8-12 mins, by which time they will be lightly golden around the

edges. Cool on a rack and continue with the rest of the dough [which also

freezes well if the first half makes enough biscuits for you, btw]. When

they're all fully coooled, you can get on with the icing. Put a couple of

tablespoons of just-not-boiling water into a large bowl, add the sieved

icing sugar and mix together, adding more water as you need to form a thick

paste. Colour as desired: let the artistic spirit within you speak,

remembering with gratitude that children have very bad taste.

There you go! Josh and I spent a happy afternoon doing these the other

week. There are photos on http://www.uptails.freeserve.co.uk/cooking.html

if you're interested!!

Enjoy,

Vicki

GAAH! No there isn't! DH has spent the afternoon teaching himself how to

write web pages and, in the process, has deleted most of this one. And I'm

too tired and too cold to put it all together again tonight :)

And he hasn't shined the sink and the kitchen's a tip!! PAH! Men!!!!

Just got my stuff delivered from Sainsbury's and guess WHAT!!! My

three tubs of Bob the Builder Dough that I thought we'd all make

biscuits with tomorrow are not biscuit dough AT ALL! They're good ol'

playdough.

I can't believe it!!!

I can't think of anything I need less than three tubs of sticky Bob

playdough, especially with MIL around.

OK, maybe I should have realised. But I'm afraid " dough " only means

one thing to me and that's biscuits!!! One-track mind there I guess.
