Guest guest
Maybe everyone else has already seen this, but I rented " I Am Sam " with Pfeiffer and Penn last night and LOVED it! Penn does a great job of portraying an adult with mental retardation and autistic tendencies. Kind of a tearjerker, but it is uplifting. " Sam ( Penn) is one of the Anawim, those who are simple, poor in spirit and on the margin of society, especially in the big, bad city of Angels. Although Sam is physically an adult, his mental capacity is that of a seven year old. He works as a busboy at Starbucks. In a twist of fate he has fathered a child with a homeless woman who came to stay with him. Upon giving birth, she leaves Sam with the newborn baby girl and disappears. Somehow, with the help of his agoraphobic neighbor Annie (Dianne Wiest), and the goodwill of his equally misfit friends, Sam manages to raise Lucy (the wonderfully captivating Dakota Fanning) up till the age of seven. Unlike her father, Lucy is normal and begins to question what he can't be/do for her. Embarrassed at a surprise birthday party, she runs out on him and unwittingly sets the stage for the child welfare agency to intervene and place her in custody of the court and then with foster parent Randy Carpenter ( Dern). Encouraged by his friends to get a fast talking, four name law firm attorney, Sam manages to retain Rita on ( Pfeiffer), an uptight and frustrated professional, to take his case pro bono. The rest of the film deals with Sam and his fight to regain custody of Lucy against seemingly impossible odds. Along the way Sam has a profound influence on everyone (especially on Rita whose own domestic troubles are as profound as Sam's), opening eyes and hearts to see beyond their limitations and conventional approaches to life and love. " If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend it. Leggs
