Boone was bitten several times by some creepy crawly thing(s) yesterday. They

looked like mosquito bites, but they were rather hard to the touch.

Today, a bite on his upper arm had a 3-inch red, raised rash surrounding it. It

was hot to the touch and very hard. He said it didn't hurt.

I called the ER and told them I was a slightly paranoid mother and looked up

brown recluse spider bites on the Internet and that this bite was exactly like

the one-day-old bites I saw. They said I should not wait for ped's office to

open tomorrow, that I should bring him in.

So I did.

The nurse was a rather surly man who insisted that Boone needed to have his

temperature taken. They didn't have the ear thermometers or the forehead strips.

I explained that it would be quite impossible to take his temperature without

one of those items. He insisted that he would have to take it rectally if Boone

wouldn't allow a thermometer in his mouth.

I tried to explain that I didn;t think he had a fever and about autism and

sensory issues but I could see in his eyes that he didn't give a flip.

Boone was in a cheerful mood, but he let the guy know he could just buzz off. He

left, warning us he would return with a rectal thermometer.

The ER doctor was a very attractive young woman of Middle Eastern descent. She

didn't think he had a fever either.

Boone tried to sweet-talk her by telling her about the cool 24-hour clock he'd

seen in the triage.

She made friends with him by tickling him lightly (and even asked him if she

could first!). She couldn't help herself, she had to laugh when she tried to

listen to his heart and lungs with her stethoscope. He kept making " heartbeat "

sounds.

She'd get tickled and start giggling at him and then he'd look into her eyes and

giggle back. She was so genuinely sweet and nurturing that I wanted to hug her.

I think she really understood him.

He's been adorable all day long.

Anyway, without the guilty spider (or insect) she can't know for sure what type

of bite it is, but she said he is definitely having an allergic reaction to the

bite. She prescribed antibiotics and benadryl and we have to go see Dr. Wahbeh

within the next three days or sooner if it gets worse.

I drew a ring around it with a marker to see if it spreads.

Hopefully the meds will clear it up. I just can't stop thinking about HSP since

insect bites are a major trigger. HSP seems to love the men in my family.

Poor Boone!!! I'm so glad he charmed the doctor though, that's SO sweet. I

swear, those Middle Eastern women are just the best. We had one (a

resident) on our visit to the dev ped the other day, and she was the FIRST

doc to be able to do a neuro exam on him, (walking on tiptoes, finger to

nose, etc.) He was smiling at her and she (like yours) was giggling back.

The only thing he put up a fight about was the thing to measure the head.

They take the time to listen, and get to know the kid a bit first, which

makes all the difference in the world.

Prayers for Boone that the bite goes away quickly with no after effects,

especially HSP!!!

I was really amazed. ER doctors usually have no personality and no bedside

manner whatsoever.

She asked if a spider bit him. He said no.

She asked if an ant bit him. He said no.

She asked if a mosquito bit him. He said no.

She asked if his brother bit him, He said yes and laughed. (Who says auties

don't have a sense of humor?)

I am a nurse myself-we are taught that a patient always has the right to

refuse treatment and in the case of a minor the parent/gaurdian can refuse. We

are also taught to seek alternatives appropriate to the situation.Seems to me

Mr. Nightingale could have called central supply or the peds unit to see if

they had what was needed-it sounds like someone needs some sensitivity

training-oh wait how a 'bout a swift kick in the ass-yeah that sounds better.

Sorry it just burns me up to see nurses do crap like that.

Yucky! I hate bugs. I saw a centipede on my porch yesterday and went

crazy with the bug spray. I hope it goes away for him.

And at least the doc was nice! That's always a plus.

Henoch-Schonlein purpura. It's an autoimmune hypersensitivity vasculitis and

can lead to kidney failure. It's extremely painful and the acute phase can

last from months to years.

This is what Dillon has. My dad has it to. Dillon has a chronic kidney

disease (in remission) from it and my dad's kidneys have failed (acute renal

failure not end-stage renal failure) because of it. The type Dillon has

(crescentic) is progressive.

What kind of ER doesn't have an ear thermometer? That's all I've seen in

ERs for YEARS!

What a breath of fresh air she must have been after the mafioso nurse.

Why are insect bites a trigger for a kidney disease? That's so strange and

completely unfair.

I hope Boone fels better and that it turns out to be nothing big. I got a nasty

spider bite when I lived in NC. It was horrible and about the size of a softball

was the reaction I got and it was hard and on fire! They wanted to put me in the

hospital and I couldnt as I had the boys and Jeff was AF and not able to take

time off. Bugs are just nasty things! The dr sounds fantastic!

How wonderful to get such an understanding Dr.!! I hope it turns out to be

an ordinary run of the mill spider bite and not a recluse bite. I'm

uncertain about the rash, but the large raised bump that's hot to the touch

is typical of an allergic reaction to a bite, so with the antibiotics, we'll

hope it does't progress.

Silly nit! Of course they are not as accurate but they will give you an

idea. Sounds like a sadist who just liked tortuing kids to me. My doctor

told me they take any information, including mom's hand on the forehead. I

can't tell a low fever but I can sure tell a high one, and generally a

medium one too.
