Guest guest
Hi there--although I can't help you in the Manhattan area (I am in south Alabama), I can tell you that you have a LOT of information, thanks to this site, and health professionals) about whether or not you decide that banding is right for your child. Our 6 month old son is waiting on his Starband to arrive at the moment. He had a contusion on one side of his head when he was born, and started to favor the other side of his head when sleeping. It blossomed into a chronic habit that we couldn't fix with repositioning, and it was worsened by the fact that he has always hated being on his tummy. I really belabored the idea of banding, and once I learned of the possible health problems that could arise if intervention does not take place (TMJ, eye problems, etc), I was inclined to do so, but still nervous. Although there certainly is a cosmetic component to this problem, it is primarily medical in nature. The last thing that pushed me over the edge was thinking about the possible emotional effects that could occur in later years if it is not corrected, and how my son would feel (if I decided not to band) if he found out that I had been given the resources to correct his problem, and chose not to. That's my two cents. I hope it helps in some way, and best wishes to you in your decision-making. > > I just saw a pediatric neurosurgeon at NYU who recommended a band for > our 6 month old. Guest guest
Hi, I actually had seen a doctor in NYU as well, Dr. Wisoff. What doctor have you seen? He recommended a place in Brooklyn. It was a little bit of a bother at first, but I soon realized it was the right choice. The Orthotist, Rochelle Silberman, had a child of her own wear a helmet and was able to give me a real understanding of it, and allowed me to make the right decision. You can check out the website at Kidisplint.com for more info. They were extremely accommodating and helped me through every step of it. The visits are once every two weeks after the initial fitting and they have Sunday and evening hours. Speak to Rochelle and take it from there. It was the fastest and easiest experience I could have imagined. Best of luck. Chavie StarBand Graduate > > I just saw a pediatric neurosurgeon at NYU who recommended a band for > our 6 month old. Guest guest
We saw Dr. Wisoff also. He was great. He recommended the place in his building, but I'm on the West Side and 34th and the river is really a pain!!! His receptionist gave me a few others, including Bobby Brown at West 23rd who she recommended very highly, and we have an appointment to see him on Friday. His assistant was lovely and they got us in right away. She's already been in touch with our insurance to apply for coverage (who knows, though, how that will turn out!). Hopefully he'll be as good as they say, and that won't be as inconvenient... Thanks for the help. Did they use a laser or a plaster mold to make the band? My only real reservation is that they use a plaster mold, and I'm worried it will be really hard on my son, and will aggravate his sensitive skin... > > > > I just saw a pediatric neurosurgeon at NYU who recommended a band > for > > our 6 month old.
