Ruthie

So very glad to see your name 'pop-up' this afternoon - as soon as I

heard the awful news I thought of you. Be safe.

Beverly

Who is now seriously re-thinking her proposed trip to the States in

mid-december - what would you do?

I'd still go, but that's me, I go to Jerusalem when a lot of people

cancel.

You can't live your life always running away from potential danger,

that's the way I see it, anyway.

Lot's of people have different comfort zones. It's certainly a different

decision when you have small children to think about.

Um..I can hardly be considered " dependent-less " even though I have no

more small children. Sara and Benzy and their six young children

still decided to come to Israel with us for the Sukkot holidays. Is

there *anywhere* in the world that is truly safe these days?

Bin man, if you're out there....I have logged onto mailandnews.com and

opened up an account *twice* (different details) and whenever I want

to log onto it and get my mail it gives me an error message with my

login details.

Hey!! I thought I was seeing things - I'm Ruth, you're Ruthie -

people will mix us up!

Glad you are ok, but awful news. Just for the record, I think KBHolm

(Yahoo address name, I forget the first name, sorry!) is being a bit

harsh on you too, let's keep the critisism to ourselves eh?

Don't want to turn this into a saga but have to defend Karina here ...

Ruthie's email did read badly and Karina reacted as I was thinking ... if

she hadn't have said it I would have. Justified I feel.

Hear, hear.

I'm desperate to get back to NYC. And DH is just considering a job in

Israel.

We both lived and worked in London and narrowly escaped a fair few IRA

bombs. Life is for living.

Sorry, but I don't agree. I don't think I am usually very touchy, but

seeing the horror on the news with hundreds of people dying in

flames, I thought Ruthie's e-mail a bit flippant (a bit Jo ).

I've got little 3-week old niece Dahlia in Chicago, and all SIL's

family are in New York, so any time something like this happens we

worry about them all - especially SIL who must be very emotional at

the moment caring for and feeding her first baby on her own.

Apologies Ruthie, but I was a bit hurt - I also didn't think talking

about going for a sightseeing to Ground Zero was very sensitive, and

I didn't say anything then for worry about upsetting you, but this

time I felt I had to. Sorry again - I know you are a nice person so

I'm sure it's just the way your mails read :-). I'm not the type of

person to send anonymous critical mails though, so thought it better

to mention it here, on-line, in person.

Is the error with logging into M & N? You could try creating a hotmail account

which should also be able to access your pop3 acct. I haven't tried this so I

don't know how flexible the hotmail options for this are. Or could the error be

with M & N talking to your mail server. Is there any chance you could have those

details wrong. Could you try telnetting from the Mac into your mail server just

to check this. POP3 is 110 (can't look it up from here) and then the commands

are

USER <username>

PASS <password>

STAT will give you a list of messages

RETR <msgnum> I think you may be able to specify a number of bytes to retrieve

as a parameter to this as well. I would check but all my mailboxes are empty.

If you want to contact me off list with any password details I could try it out

from here (although i wouldn't do that myself)

Sorry, didn't meanto sound flippant or irreverant. In fact I wouldn't

have wanted to go, but my family said I should. It won't be sight

seeing, more paying respect.

I am just as horrified as anyone about today's crash too, and there

has been nothing else on the radio all day. :((

I didn't like what Ruthie had said either, but I took it that she

going to pay her respects rather than ogle at the spectacle, and I

didn't say anything for fear of upsetting anyone again! - I think *I*

am being a bit sensitive too and I was anticipating Ruthie's hurt

reply with dread - maybe you were right to speak up - as long as we

are all honest with each other and don't start to take sides again

there shouldn't be a problem (I hope!) It is so easy for us to

irritate each other with ill-worded E-Mails, when face-to-face we

would understand the meaning better.

Also, you are right to put your thoughts here on the site and not use

a personal reply, which could easily be misconstrued - I stand

corrected :) I am sure we are all on the same wavelength though, and

praying for the poor victims in NY, and continuing to support each

other when we can.

I think I would feel a bit weird *not* going if I were there. At this

stage I have the impression that it wouldn't be rubbernecking (even

though I generally have strong feelings about that and the sea of

cellophane with flowers hidden inside phenomenon). (Ditto feeling

that when I went on holiday to Munich I really ought to go to Dachau)

>I am just as horrified as anyone about today's crash too, and there

And I'm sure most of us *would* also have had concerns about getting

home in your position.

Sometimes horror is not expressed explicitly. I know that when Sept

11th happened and I was on holiday with my family, none of us said

anything along those lines, it was just too difficult (especially

with everyone else already doing it)

I apologise unreservedly for any offence caused by my ham-handed way

of expressing things. I am not a rubber necker or ghoul, and I really

am just going to pay respects, on the way to doing a bit of Chinatown

and Manhattan shopping with my sister in law.
