Guest guest
It is getting quite cold in our bedroom (15-18 degrees, depending on weather). I am fine with this but DD (8 weeks) who is in the crib, sometimes creeps up the crib and out from her covers. Her hands feel freezing (which I am less concerned with) but sometimes the rest of her feels colder than usual. DW is convinced that she sleeos better when she is warmer although I am not conviced that this is the case. Anyway, getting to the point, we though about one of those baby sleeping bags (bib top, sleeping bag bottom). Can anyone comment on the advice that these should be avoided for younger babies or on how good they are? james

We got Mari what we lovingly called her 'sack' when she was around 6 months old and she has only recently stopped sleeping in it. The initial reason for getting one was the same as you with Eva but we also found as she got older that putting her in it had a calming influence on her and was great for reading her bedtime story in because she kept still (rare for Mari)! So I'd definitely recommend one. I don't know about the advice with not using them for younger babi's - I know that there are french makes that are marketed from birth - but then women in france are not advised to avoid unpasteurised cheese either - IYSWIM We didn't have this dilemma as Mari was born in the May and we sleep with Nia - but I will be putting her in one once she's sleeping independently Sorri for the ramble brain cells distinctly uncoordinated at the mo!! DD1 was a November baby - but we didn;t have a sleeping bag for her -DD2 was july and I made a fleece one for her first winter which really did make a difference to her sleeping! I'd be interested to know the current thinking on NBs in them as I'm expecting a Jan bay this time!! My thoughts would be that so long as you treat it as the equivalent in blankets rather than as a sleep suit (which you wouldn;t do!) then there shouldn;t be a danger of over heating. The alternative is a thick , maybe fleecy sleep suit instead of a cotton babygro, which you put her in over the vest, and then adjust blankets accordingly. Guest guest
Never heard anywere not to use them from birth? DS was in his from about 8-10 weeks, and I think there the best thing since sliced bread! - due to the fact he's such a wiggler he never kept blankets on, and yes all babies will wake if there cold, they do sleep better when warm (or in my sons case sweating like a pig!). I think in the Urchin catalogue they have a all singing all dancing one with a booster liner and zip off arms, but it is pricey. Guest guest
Anyone visiting this list for the first time would *know* how broad our social base is seeing ' name and the title of this post!! - I used them for DS and because he was always kicking the covers off, I'm sure he slept better with the bag on - we got sleeveless ones when he was a baby which he wore over pyjamas but by this time it was summer - if cold nights I wanted to put extra arms on without any extra on the body IYSWIM (8 months onwards, before that he was in bed with us) and then all in ones with arms when he was an older toddler, probably about 2. However for a smaller baby, you could sew a line across a few inches from where the feet would end to make a bigger one smaller, which would mirror the feet to bottom suggestions and keep moving the sewn line as the baby grew. all best Caro those baby sleeping bags (bib top, sleeping bag bottom). Guest guest
- BTW I think I may still have DD's sleeping bag if you want to try it out? Guest guest
Glad to hear all the positive comments about the sleeping bags/suits for babies. Been so organised (! in my dreams I think) I bought one for my Godson for his Christmas present when we were in France on our summer holidays. I hope he gets lots of use out of it. Guest guest
, I happen to have found some cotton quilting and cotton interlining in my fabric stash while doing my 27 fling boogie in the study last weekend... the quilting is red and white check - the red check has a white love heart in it, with a rabbit or a house inside the loveheart; and the white check has either some small love hearts, or a bunch of tulips, or a ring 'a roses in it (alternating up the diagonal iyswim) If you would like, I can knock you up a sleeping bag. I can also take a photo of the fabric and email it to you!! It's really pretty... (This is possibly not such a generous offer as it sounds: I really could do with the shelf space!!) BTW, my babies are April, September and December and they have all used a sleeveless, v-necked, zip-all-the-way up the front sleeping bag until well after their first birthday. As someone said, use in lieu of bedding rather than as well as, and I'm sure you'll be fine! Best, Vicki
Guest guest
Excellent inventions - we had two (one to use, one for spare/if sicked on) and used for a week then washed in washing machine. Would thoroughly recommend them. Ours came from France where everything baby is so much cheaper. They were about £12 each. IIRC they do 2 sizes/types, one for up to 6mths (zip round bottom and up side) and over 6mths where zip up front (either zip up or zip down - zip down better as when they're older they can't reach the zip to fiddle so easily). The expensive French ones go up to about age 5 with zip in/out arms and you can get some which have press studs to make them longer as baby grows. (didn't get that luxury with a £12 one!) We didn't find them until our 2nd winter when DS was 1, but what a life saver they were. He definitely slept miles better with it, and I didn't have to get up in the night to " check " he was covered up (like I do now). Wasn't even really a problem when he could stand up either, he used to move around cot a bit like a sack race! Ours did DS and were used by a friend's baby until we got to France and bought them their own - quite happy to post to you to loan for a trial if you like (though they are the 6m+ size) as they haven't made it back up in the loft yet. Guest guest
When I've seen them in mail order brochures (Jojomamanbebe for instance) they say from 6 months, but this may just be a guideline. The one I have had for my last two says from 6 months to 3 years I think and it's made in France. The bottom 10 inches folds over and does up with poppers for when they're really little. My baby is now 7 months and hasn't really needed it until some of the colder nights recently so was over 6 months when we started using it. Guest guest
Thanks for that Cerys! Another shopping opportunity! Having not really planned this baby I had got rid of all out baby stuff and need to start from scratch again. So far I have been to the Aveda shop and bought myself a raw silk toiletries bag filled with travel sizes of all my favourite products to take to the maternity centre with me. Do you think that counts as being almost ready? Just as well I've got a wee while left yet... http://www.foxstitch.co.uk/ Cerys Byrne wrote: > Bonne Nuit do sleeping bags which they say are suitable from birth > > http://www.bonne-nuit.co.uk/system/index.html
Guest guest
Kiddycare continental baby sleeping bags advertise in the NCT Maternity Sales Catalogue p16. Their contact details are 01343 890 389 www.kiddycarebabybags.com if you buy from them please mention NCTMS (as we get some commission from some of our advertisers). There seem to be quite a range of sizes, tog ratings and fabrics so you should find something to suit. Guest guest
Just been to have a look at these sleeping bags - rather fancy a White Pique one -but they are embroidered in either Blue or Pink! Now I know that all our friends in the US last week were amazed that I hadn't discovered the sex of this baby but I thought that it was fairly normal not to know in this country! I suppose I could go for the yellow gingham option - but my two always looked particularly revolting in yellow as newborns and can't see that this one will be much different. On a related (almost) note, a lot of our US acquaintances were horrified that we are having a third baby - to the extent that I didn't dare admit that it wasn't planned. One person even accused us of being sex maniacs!! I don't see that having 3 children in 5 years would necessitate being a sex addict!!! Makes me wonder what the US attitude is to 'large families'? http://www.foxstitch.co.uk/ Cerys Byrne wrote: > Bonne Nuit do sleeping bags which they say are suitable from birth > > http://www.bonne-nuit.co.uk/system/index.html

Mari's have all been sleeveless too - she only stopped sleeping in her 'sack' a month or so ago aged 3 and a bit! Never thought we'd persuade her out of it but she just handed it to me and said " keep it for the babi " She had two - necessary if they are going to sleep in them every night - and both had zips down the side rather than the front and poppers on the bottom to adjust as she got older. She was getting pretty tucked in hers by the time she decided she was a big girl now. Still need to prise her " me me " away from her at some stage! Guest guest
Why don't you Email them and place the order but ask them to hold it until the baby's born? tell them that someone will let them know which you need and they can post it then. Florence who runs Bonne Nuit is really nice, she came to our Parent & Baby Fayre, she's an NCT member too. Guest guest
thank you all for your comments and offers (esp. Lynda , Caro and Vicki, I am quite touched). my mother (dm?) got one (grobag one, I think) over the w/e and is going to bring it round tonight. We have been trying out warmer baby grows in the mean time and dd is continuing to sleep for six or seven hours most nights (dw said she could imagine having another the other day!). On an unrelated note we had our first w/e away at PIL's in Somerset (Cheddar). Dd slept all the way from London (with one break for a feed) both ways and was a little darling whilst we were there. She also met Eva snr (G.G-M, whose own G.G-M was also called Eva, we learned). We (dw and I) both found it a bit stressful at times (nothing big though) and we have proved that it can be done james not sahd to eva hb 23/9/
