Childrens shoes

I confess that I too have dipped into flylady's website and although

found it wasn't for me, did feel inspired to clear out a few

cupboards. Result is a mountain (4 years worth) of boy's shoes,

pretty scuffed and grotty looking, but would probably clean up OK.

What do other people do with old shoes? There must be something,

other than chucking them away?

Suggestions gratefully received!

Like you, I just keep them. I've been able to do a fair bit of hand-me

downs with shoes, so it's been worthwhile. I suppose eventually I will

just give them all to charity (not ds's trainers though - yuk!). It

certainly adds up to a lot of shoes - 4 children: shoes, trainers, wellies,

winter boots, slippers, football boots, ballet shoes, sandals - I'd hate to

add up how much they all cost. Me - I get one pair of new shoes every year

or two, my wellies I've had since I was at school, trainers for 8 years,

winter boots for 6 years <sound of violins in background>.

Where I used to live (London SW14), a couple of shoe shops had bins

where you could donate shoes to less fortunate people; also there

were Humana boxes at places for similar donations ... some charity

shops will take them if strapped together and marked with size; our

NNS people don't like taking as they say they don't go. Sometimes

social services will give contact for battered wives refuges through

an intermediary, I think...

I wonder whether it would be possible to find refugee accommodation

which might possibly be glad to have them, or ditto people collecting

for buses going to places like Romania and Kosovo?

A lot of supermarkets have recyling bins, which often include one for Barnardos.

These specifically ask for old clothes, shoes, etc. Locally, we have shoe shop

which will take old shoes for recycling when purchasing new ones, which saves

having to take the old ones home.

Locally there are Shoe Collection bins at Sainsburys (with the other

recycling) Mister Minit and Asda, I think.

Take them to the clothing bank! That is where everything that doesn't

make it to the NNS goes! At least it is passed on or recycled.

Thanks all for the recycling suggestions! That's what I'll do. For

some reason I had the idea that shoes weren't desirable, but the cost

they are I couldn't bear to throw them away.....durrhhh.

We actually have a really good recycling scheme locally. Green

plastic boxes are provided by the council, and every second week

recyclable stuff is collected from the front door! (Will take my

shoes to Sainsburys or the like though - want to make sure they are

used!)
