Hi, I thought I'd have a look in on Coffee again and see what everyone is up to!

It's been a while since I went No Mail so I'll do a quick re-intro.

I'm Lesley, Chair of Deeside NCT. I'm a sahm, with DH, currently working

offshore, two DS's, aged 26 and 22 years, and two DD's aged 14 and 5 years.

Better not forget the pets, two cats, a dog and an ancient miniature rabbit.

The current issue taxing my mind (apart from the NCT AGM and Xmas!!) is the

forthcoming New Year nuptials of my eldest son and his lovely American

girlfriend.

If anyone wants to see us in all our glory, have a look here. :-)

Lovely pictures Lesley, until I re-read that you are from Deeside I

thought you were American! When is the wedding? My own youngest

daughter is getting married on Jan 28th.

There's no date set for the wedding yet, it's going to be a last minute

private civil ceremony, all very complicated due to visa requirements in the

UK! It will be either late Jan or Feb depending on DH's work, and

Jordana's family's ability to get suitable flights from LA.

They plan a blessing and celebratory party combined with a farewell do in

May, shortly before they leave the UK to move to California. That will be

followed at some point by a Jewish ceremony in LA at which the girls will be

attendants.

It's doing my head in, trying to make arrangements when some of those

involved are halfway round the world, (including my son atm!!!) and thinking

about not one, not two, but three wedding outfits for myself and the girls.

I thought I might let DH buy a new tie for the occasion, as well. ;-))

Tell me about it. (the outfits). I have just come back from the

alterations dressmaker with the stuff I bought in NY last week, and

tried on the one I plan to wear for the dinner for the first time

since I bought it. Zehava is still in " sem " so she hasn't seen it and

given her seal of approval, but I must say, having tried it on again,

I *love* it. It's so simple and yet so glitzy. It's a long black

chiffon skirt, the bottom is fluted and layered, gypsy style, (like a

lot of short skirts I have seen recently) and it floats beautifully.

Worn with a simple black satin camisole, and then the piece de

résistance; this gorgeous black and silver cardigan jacket, hanging

in perfect soft folds, fold upon fold, shorter at the front, and

dipping lower at the back. The whole jacket is covered in silver

threads and sparkly bits. At the moment it doesn't fasten at all, but

we are going to put in two buttons and button holes. I have to go and

look for the buttons tomorrow. Hopefully black and silver sparkly.

I have another suit to wear for the " chuppah " (wedding ceremony)..it's

black (again) with a row of diamanté outlining the lapels and sparkly

buttons, and satin cuffs with more diamanté buttons. Otherwise

completely plain.

" Worry " .

Congratulations - how exciting! Even if it does all sound rather

complicated!

DS1's fiancée is Jewish, hence the LA ceremony.

At least you're not having to prepare outfits for my two girls as well.

Ruthie! One is a fashion victim teenager and the other only ever wants to

dress up in fairy or ballerina clothes. Perfect for a freezing winter's day

in Edinburgh!! :-)

True, she's my last daughter so I don't have the " other side " 's

problem of kitting out their three unmarried teenage daughters, thank

heavens!!

I still have quite a few outfits to buy the bride though. After a

Jewish wedding there is a week of celebratory dinner parties, and the

newly wedded bride has to have at least *some* new things to wear for

those, it's considered setting her up for " best " wear for a while.

Although what usually happens is they get pregnant quickly(ish) and

the outfits never quite fit the same afterwards...

She's coming back from sem today so it will be hitting the shops time

for us this week.

I don't envy her!! We couldn't wait to get away on her own after our wedding

even if we combined our honeymoon with a bookfair in New York that DH had to

attend. Will they have a honeymoon after that?

Honeymoons aren't considered important in orthodox culture, as a lot

of the young men are still yeshivah students and " getting back to

learning " is considered more " worthy " than having a holiday. Often the

yeshivahs are in Israel anyway, but whether setting up home for the

first time in a foreign country, away from home with none of the

" mummy support " can be considered a holiday is a moot point!

With me and DH, for example, he was a law student in Cambridge when

we got married, and our wedding was in the July immediately following

the six day war of 1967, so we went to Israel for 10 weeks or so till

uni began again.

But it wasn't a holiday in the traditional sense; we rented a tiny

(one bedroomed) flat in Jerusalem, DH went off to learn in a yeshivah

all day, and I spent my time hosting and cooking gargantuan meals for

all his many bachelor relatives who kept showing up on our doorstep

with their sleeping bags rolled up under their arms!! After that war

the country was full of volunteers to help clean up, and 99% of them

seemed to be related to DH!!! It certainly threw me in the deep end

of catering for numbers, but I loved all the young male (and some

female!) company, and we all had a blast. Being brought up as an only

child, with a mother who found *any* guests totally traumatic and

panic inducing, I was determined to be an easy going and relaxed

hostess when I got married, and adopt an open house policy. This was,

it must be said, stretched to the limits when our so called

" honeymoon " involved us not being on our own for a single night of

those ten weeks, but I came home pregnant, so it can't have been

*that* bad LOL!!!

Tavya and Dov nipped off for a few days in the Lake District after

their wedding week. Moishi has been talking about going to LA (he has

cousins there they would stay with) but it might be considered a bit

extravagant. Zehava dropped broad hints that maybe we would like to

pay for it, but DH refused, so basically if Moishi or his parents want

to finance the LA trip, fine by us!

Thanks for the welcome, Janet. It's scary to think I'll be a MIL. I still

feel 25 inside, how can I be a MIL??? But Jordana is such a lovely girl, it

will be a pleasure to have her in our family. Sadly, once they move to the

USA we won't see very much of them, but her family are also very keen to

involve us as much as possible with them, which is nice.
