- thanks for your help (you think with a physics degree and patent

attorney that specialises in telecoms and computer related inventions I'd

know wouldn't you :-))

The Canon printer is the S300 (or maybe it was SP300).

Do you know anything about it?

ooooops, I read that as a price of $300. The moel appears to be BJ-S300

(although confusingly there is a canon s300 camera as well)

Just had a look at the spec and it looks ok. It depends a little what you want

it for. It is four rather than six colour which could make a difference with

printing photos. Amazon hace it at USD99 which seems reasonable enough to me. I

don't know anyone with a canon printer so I can't comment on the software that

comes with it. If you can, it would be worth going into a shop and getting them

to (or let you) print out something of your own (those sample prints don't

really mean anything). The other really important thing is to find out how much

the consumables cost. Printers are really a kind of loss leader to make you buy

ink. I couldn't find a price on the BCI-24 black and colour cartridges that it

takes (perhaps because they are new) but this will make the difference in

printing costs

: I have an Epson Stylus 760. Is that four or six colour? If

it's only four I would consider upgrading cos I do a LOT of photo

printing from my digital camera.

I have a Canon S600 and it prints out excellent photos using the special

glossy paper/card. It has only four inks, but the advantage of this model

is that they are all in separate cartridges so you don't have to replace

when the first one runs out. Theoretically, this should save some money.

The 6-cartridge Canon was about double the price, which I couldn't justify

given how little I use a colour printer.

it is 4 colour. As Joyce commented, separate cartridges usually means cheaper

printing as you waste less ink (although it is still worth comparing the costs

as different cartridge types can vary enormously in price and the same

cartridges from different suppliers can vary a lot as well. There is, naturally

a trade-off between printer sophistication (eg number of ink colours) and price

so it really depends what an individual wants from their printer (not to mention

what their budget is). The important thing is to try it out and see what *you*

think. Also to try not to let sales people (or friends, or list groups(!) push

you around). The first question that someone in a shop should be asking you is

What do you want to do with it? ten they should *listen* to your answer. Don't

assume that they know much (any) more than you do either.

I think I am losing focus here, so I will stop...
