Driving while using narcotics

On the subject of driving while using narcotics..........even though

after taking narcotics for awhile the light-headed feeling is not

there or is not there as much, no one should drive while taking

narcotics. One of the problems being the feeling of " not being

impaired " but in reality actually being impaired. It would be a

tragedy to have an accident and hurt yourself or someone else

because of thinking we are in control while on narcotics!

I don't know the answer to these problems we face with pain medicine

but I do know that under no circumstances shouild anyone drive under

the influence of narcotics! At the very least....and I mean very

least, if there were an accident and it was not your fault and no

one got hurt, if it was proven that you had narcotics in your

system, an attorney would have a field day with that. Even though

it was not your fault. If it were your fault and it was proven that

there were narcotics in your system, I believe a judge would throw

the book!

It may sound harsh, but driving with narcotics in the system is no

different than driving under the influence of alcohol. We have all

done it at one time or another and not gotten caught but that does

not mean eventually it won't happen.

No way would I ever advocate nor do I think anyone in the PAI should

advocate taking narcotics for pain and driving a vehicle for any

reason!

I had always wondered if I would get arrested or fined if I was

driving whilst on pain meds. When I was leaving the hospital after a

stay for pancreatitis, it had been 6 hours since my last pain meds,

I asked the doctor if it was safe for me to drive the car home and

he told me as long as I wasn't feeling wonky or sleepy, then it

should be fine...
