I recommend that you contact

Frente Indígena Oaxaqueño Binacional (FIOB)

They have provided translator services for a number of

indigenous languages from Oaxaca.

They are located in the central valley in California

but may be able to be of assistance. Below is their

contact information in California, in Oaxaca, and in

Baja California Norte.

Has the hospital contacted the telephone

interpreter services? Oregon and California have

established Zapotec communities and support systems where interpreters and

translators may be readily available.

Clarification concerning the need –

does the hospital need written translation of consent or related forms or interpreter

services for oral translation? Does anyone know which dialect (dialogue is not

the proper word) the family speaks or where the family is from, this would make

it easier finding a linguistic match as dialects are regionally specific.

I have a couple of contacts I will track

down but I would appreciate it if the originator of this appeal would contact

Zapotec and indigenous dialectics are such

a challenge.  I unfortunately have no resources to tap into.  In light of the

immediate emergency may I suggest a member of the Mexican Consulate be contacted. 

They have offices everywhere and may be helpful in this urgent situation.  If

I totally agree w/ you. I work for the Oregon Law Center and we have collaborated with the OR Judicial Department to train indigenous language speakers to become qualify interpreters. We have a good a list of Zapoteco speakers and again it is really important to get the exact name of the village and the municipality of that village. I can be contacted at 5033-981-0336.
