Guest guest
My son Zach is 16 months old and is taking 2 Ultrase MT 12 capsules (in applesauce) with meals and snacks. We keep increasing his enzymes because his stool frequency stays the same. According to his doctor he should have less poop. If anyone else has a child about Zach's age, what is your child's enzyme dosage? Also, Zach's poop is always very yellow and orange. Is this normal for CF too? He also is on 1.25 ml of Pepcid twice a day. Thanks. Sara
Guest guest
Is he drinking juice - it was the first thing our ped. told us to do - before adjusting enzyme doses or anything else. It solved the problem. I use a milk equivalency to measure the amount of enzymes we require: 1 cup of whole milk has x amount of fat (I don't rember right now it is either 8 or 12 grams) and requires 8,000 lipase units (we use cotazyme ecs 8). If he has a hotdog with 16 grams of fat he needs two capsuls. Guest guest
HI My son, Jaycen is also 16 months old. Right now he is taking 2-3 capsules per feed and 1-2 with snacks. He is on cotazyme ecs #4. I find that I am struggling a bit with the enzymes as he needs more or less with different foods. If Jaycen has any kind of tomatoe base food then his poop is that color. lol. I wish there was some sort of guideline. For example, for 1 hamburger give 1 1/2 enzymes. Instead of trial and error and upset tummies and sleepless nights. Jaycen's poops are inconsistent though. He will have good poops one day or one week and then it is mush--sometimes yellow. Are you still breastfeeding? I know Jaycen's poops go yellow when he needs more enzymes. Guest guest
Sara, yellow and orange poop is probably malabsorbtion. Maybe ask about changing enzymes at CF clinic? If his frequency and color don't improve with more of the same brand that might not be the best brand of enzymes for him. good luck! 16 month old and enzymes My son Zach is 16 months old and is taking 2 Ultrase MT 12 capsules (in applesauce) with meals and snacks. Guest guest
Sara, Ideally, you want to achieve best poops possible with lowest enzyme dose possible. If you're still seeing yellow-orange poops, especially with oil present, then Zack is still malabsorping, which means enzymes and Pepcid aren't helping. This can be due to: --needs a different brand/strength of enzyme --teething --intestinal inflammation --disruption of normal intestinal flora (needs a probiotic) --eating too much hard-to-digest fat in the same day. Example, my son could never eat peanut butter and hot dogs on the same day. If he did then it would always disrupt the balance. Meds are tricky. Even when they look pharmacological similar they can effect people differently. While Ultrase and Pancrease appear the same, Ultrase doesn't work for my son. And while doctors argued with me that Zantac and Axid are " alike " I had a horrible, 3-fold reaction to Zantac; though, my son took Zantac with no problems, and later even had better results with Prevacid. Not all acid meds are alike. Pepcid inhibits acid secretion, reducing the volume and concentration of the acid. But wouldn't you rather have his enzymes work without having to alter a necessary function of the stomach? Stomach acid is produced after eating for reason -- digesting foods. And acid is crucial for digesting tough foods like meat and necessary for absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. If you suppress stomach acid for too long, then you risk becoming deficient in B vitamins -- and B vitamins help you absorp magnesium. And if you're low in magnesium then your whole body becomes too acidic -- including lungs, where certain fungus and bacteria like growing in acidic places. You can try supplementing with taurine; a lot of people with CF are deficient in taurine. Taurine is an amino acid compound, normally produced by the body (though newborns can't produce it, that's why infant formula has taurine added). Taurine is in bile acids and helps absorb fats, maintain stability of cell membranes, and regulate heart rhythms. Because some CF liver ducts may be blocked with mucous or scarred, the bile acids (containing taurine) can't get out to do the job, so that's why you see yellow, orange, oily stools. (Taurine is also partially responsible for giving poop it's classic brown color). There is plenty of research showing how taurine helps. If you have Dr. Ornstein's book about CF, you'll find taurine mentioned in there. Or you can search PubMed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi or www.healthwell.com. It sounds like there's a lot of inflammation going on, which can be proven if you notice any mucous in his stools. The surest way to reduce inflammation is alter the diet, pronto, by cutting out bad fats and oils. You'll have to read labels carefully -- nothing but canola or olive oils. No hydrogenated fats, again -- have to read all those labels, including peanut butter labels. Switching to skim milk may help too. Skim has more protein and calcium than whole milk anyway. Flax seed or flax oil is a good way to get the good fats (omega-3's) and calories into him without the inflammatory effects of other foods. I would also make sure Zach is getting adequate, highly absorbable magnesium chelate. Magnesium is an alkaline, which will calm the tummy. (Ever notice how many prescription and OTC antacids feature magnesium? Even Pepcid Complete has calcium and magnesium in it, so why not just use the magnesium?) Okay, ... your turn to tell how taurine supplements helped Santosh Kim My son Zach is 16 months old and is taking 2 Ultrase MT 12 capsules (in applesauce) with meals and snacks. Guest guest
Hi Sara, My son is 16 months as well. He takes about 3 beads with one powdered enzyme per meal. The dietician at our clinic told us to start giving him the powder, which he had since birth, with the beads because his poops were big, bulky and very frequent. Now they are still big, but not as bad. IT is such a hit and miss thing. With snacks he gets one or two beads only. We just keep experimenting to see what works. My son, , his poops are so smelly, it's terrible but I guess it is a fact that goes with CF. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who answered my questions and I have another question. Zach does not digest green beans at all. He will pass them just as they were eaten. Gross! I understand that he is not digesting fat well, but shouldn't he be able to digest non-fat without difficulty if he has taken his enzymes? Guest guest
Sara, I still see the occasional chunk of food in 's poops. She LOVES carrots and eats them way too fast and they show up in the poop. Maybe he isn't chewing them enough for them to be broken down? 16 month old and enzymes > > > My son Zach is 16 months old and is taking 2 Ultrase MT 12 capsules > (in applesauce) with meals and snacks. Guest guest
Sara, Shaelin is over 2 and there are still some vegetables his body does not digest which I think is normal for that age. He loves grape tomates and the skin is often present in his stools along with the skin from the blueberries he eats. The tomato skin made it look like he was bleeding and the blueberry skin was particularly scary the first time as it looked like he had " bugs " in his stool. I was so relieved when I figured out what it was.
