Bert had a pancretectomy with islet cell autotransplant. Basically, he

had his pancreas removed and had his islet cells removed from the

pancreas and transplanted into his liver portal vein (to prevent

diabetes). Unfortunately, the cells didn't take and his is diabetic,

though he isn't brittle like he would have been without the islet cell

transplant.
