Guest guest
Hi , You asked: <<Thanks for letting me know that the kirklands is a caplet i can open and pour on his food, good to know! Where can i order these vitamins from?>> It's Kirkman Labs... and the website is: www.kirkmanlabs.com They have a whole line of supplements for ASD kids that are SCD compatible. The almond milk is simple to do... I will post instructions in a separate message. At this point, even if you didn't start SCD immediately with Luke, you could make a test batch and see if he likes and accepts it. And don't dismay if he doesn't at first. You need to realise that the out-of-control bad gut bugs in his system will cry out for MORE of the stuff they've been feeding on... and will make him CRAVE all kinds of things that are bad for him, almost like an addict (well, EXACTLY like an addict). These cravings WILL go away, though. I'm sorry to barrage you with so much information right now. Especially since you haven't read the book yet... it must be extremely overwhelming. I am going to send a separate post regarding soy, so watch for that. Soy is definitely not allowed on SCD... so if you start the diet with Luke, you would have to eliminate it. I don't mean for that to make you feel totally defeated.... my hope is that you might see that the large amount of soy he is taking in right now *may* have greatly contributed to making him worse.... and that, hopefully, once you read the logic behind why it's bad for the gut, you'd have more positive insight into why SCD may really turn things around for him. In the meantime, while you're waiting for the book to arrive, you can go to Amazon.com, search out Breaking the Vicious Cycle.... and actually read the first couple of chapters of the book right there. That will give you a jump start. The first 60 pages of BTVC contains the entire " meat " of SCD... the rest is delicious recipes. So, it's a quick read... but you will probably read it several times over and gain more and more insight. Again, I want to assure you that MANY little ones begin SCD accepting only a few foods that they have self-limited to.... most (if not all) of which are " illegal " on SCD. MANY moms feel that SCD is going to be completely impossible.... only to be gob-smacked (to borrow a term from a British friend of mine) when a few weeks later, their children are eating VEGETABLES and other healthy foods they thought they'd never touch! It's VERY common.... and I would not be the least bit surprised if Luke follows suit. I don't mean to make it sound like it will be a completely effortless transition.... it might not be. I hope, though, that as you learn more about the science behind this diet... and understand more about what's going on in your little guy's gut... you'll have more confidence to proceed. You need to be thoroughly convinced of the reasoning behind it all BEFORE you start.... so you'll solidly know why you're doing it and what to expect. Please, please, please read as much as you can at both the Pecanbread website (www.pecanbread.com) ... especially the " Success Stories " and " Food Preparation " links. And, go read as much as you can at the wonderful www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info . We're here for you... Patti, interim list moderator Re: question regarding soymilk, vitamins and more Patti, why is soymilk one of the worst offenders for Luke? What is in the soymilk that is harming him. I was told by my ped that the soymilk was good for him. A nutritionist comes to see Luke twice monthly since there are so many foods luke wont accept because of his sensory issues. She is the one who told me to make sure he is getting a full 24 ozs per day so that he gets all the proper vitamins he needs. To be honest i am really nervous about starting SCD because so many of the foods he accepts would have to go. I am worried he would be malnourished. I am praying intently about this decision, dont want to do the wrong thing! Thanks for letting me know that the kirklands is a caplet i can open and pour on his food, good to know! Where can i order these vitamins from? Could you tell me how to make almond milk in a blender please? thanks For information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, please read the book _Breaking the Vicious Cycle_ by Elaine Gottschall and read the following websites: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and http://www.pecanbread.com

I am anxiously awaiting my book and will start preparing for the changes to come! i will just have to try out this diet fanatically and trust it! I hope this helps my son and i wont have to continue with mineral oil and prune juice and suppositories for the poor kid anymore!! karen
Guest guest
Patti, thanks so much for all the information and support. Thanks for answering so many questions for me also. I will go to the kirklands website to order the vits. I guess i will save making almond milk till he gets further into the diet. Thanks for letting me know i can read the first couple chapters on amazon..that will give me a jumpstart! I DO want to try this diet for luke. I will have to let go of my fears and let the diet speak for itself. Its a bit overwhelming, but i trust that it will do him some good, so i will go for it!! Luke is at the 25% for his weight right now so i am a little concerned about him losing weight. But from what i am reading he might lose a little at first only to gain as he heals..so i wont freak out about this.

You'll get the practice... and some knowledge of his taste for it. PLUS, it would be a heck of a lot better for him to be drinking that instead of soy milk, even if you NEVER did SCD! Almond smoothies... with a half-frozen, ripe banana tossed into the blender with some of the almond milk... are to die for! Try some of the other recipes, too.... from the pecanbread.com website. Test them out. My entire family loves the peanut butter brownies (not for SCD beginners... but yummy for a bit later). They are easy... and you'll be inspired to know that some of the SCD goodies are really very good. <<Luke is at the 25% for his weight right now so i am a little concerned about him losing weight. But from what i am reading he might lose a little at first only to gain as he heals..so i wont freak out about this. >> Another thing to be thinking about is that constipation is not uncommon in the beginning... even for kids that were never constipated before. Since Luke is already suffering from that, just be prepared. Test out the SCD legal constipation protocol ahead of time.... be sure he'll accept it. I think I already mentioned beets and/or beet juice... which often really help with constipation. Beets are generally not for brand new SCD-ers either.... but if constipation is chronic, you may need to try some...cooked & pureed, and if necessary, spooned into an old Gerber jar to fool Luke. Save those jars! Guest guest
Hi ! My son started SCD a month and a half ago at 10th percentile in weight. He gained 3 lbs and almost an inch since starting the diet, so I don't think all kids lose at first. Good luck and SCD is definitely worth the shot! Janet, mom to Cody- 5 yrs old- SCD since 4-17-06- multi food allergies, leaky gut, speech delay, MB12 shots 1 1/2 yrs, high metals in baby hair, Double DQ7 gluten intolerant genes and so on.... Guest guest
Patti; Thank-you for this post! Needed to hear this right about now.
