Guest guest
Michele, The first thing I would do is to make your endocrinologist aware of this problem. I am assuming you have already tried glucose tablets to bring your blood glucose levels up? This would be my first reaction to a hypo like this. I have them more often than I prefer, due to my brittleness, and I've found glucose tablets to be the the fastest and most predictable way to raise a hypo. Second choices would be a packet of granulated sugar, or 1/2 cup orange juice. It may be that you overcorrected with insulin when your BG's jumped to 556. How much did you take? Unfortunately, after the blood glucose has passed 171, it is much more resistant to insulin, and harder to correct, so people often use more insulin than they need to in their attempts to bring it down. Last time I had a severe hyperglycemic rise like that I jumped up to 386. What I eventually found out was that my insulin was damaged. As soon as I switched to a new insulin pen, I was able to correct the problem. I have learned since to dispose of any remaining baseline insulin after 28 days, since it loses it's potency at that point. This can happen with both baseline and mealtime insulin. In regard to your bowel problems, I would suggest considerable more fiber added to your diet. Either in the way of fibrous foods, or daily fiber supplements. Personally, since I am on 24/7 pain meds, I have found that even fiber supplements and a diet high in fiber aren't enough for me. My doctor prescribed Miralax, and I take this about 3-4 times a week as long as I am taking pain medication. Let us know if any of these ideas are of any help, or if you've already tried this.
