Some children thrive for the first couple months on most of the foods with the exception of beans, lentils and members of the cabbage family. So go for the other foods slowly and carefully. Only you can determine if your child has an idiosyncracy to some of these foods. I have given you instructions in the autism chapter as for dairy. Once the gut begins to heal, many, many parents have noted significant improvement with slow introduction of the yogurt. The casein protein in dairy is an excellent protein and appears not to bother children once they are on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet for a few weeks. As I instruct, introduce the yogurt slowly and watch. The leaky gut generally stops " leaking " and then the wonderful protein of dairy can not only be well tolerated but appears to bring about significant improvement. It is just guessing if we try to give you an outline with stages. While at the DAN conference in Washington, I heard people telling me that the stages were interferring with introducing some very good recipes. For example, one nutritionist was concerned that she could not use the banana pancakes because the stages stated not to use oil until later. I explained to her that the stages were an attempt to help some people but were just " guesses. " She was relieved to find that she could then fry the pancakes in butter or oil. Some people may want to use the stages; others find them too restricting. {This is the summary from Carol} > > > If you are just getting started this may help: > > I have the new 10th edition with the autism chapter noted on the cover. > > Page 62: " Ripe mashed bananas is one of the fruits that can be tried first > > Page 63: " When brisk diarrhea is no longer present egg may be added to the diet > > Page 64: " As is advisable for all people, , a daily diet should consist of vegetables, fruits, nuts and some animal products > > Page 69 " When diarrhea and cramping subside, cooked fruit, banana and additional vegetables may be tried.
