Guest guest
I have noticed the intro diet and first few foods are those I associated with helping loose stools, rather than constipation. My daughter suffers from severe constipation. She has been constipated almost constantly for 2 years now. Has anyone encountered problems with this - i.e. their child was constipated rather than suffered from diarhea? It seems that most ASD kids seems to have diarhea rather than constipation. Are there substitutions I should be making? Thanks again! , mum to (3, severe ASD, global delays)
Guest guest
My son has also suffered from severe constipation for 2 years also. When he was 15 months, or should I say after the MMR Vac. he had severe loose stools, but then around 2.5 he started to become constipated. We started the SCD diet 4 days ago and he finnally went to the bathroom last night after giving him a pediatric suppository. I just purchased Magnesium Citrate capsules to give him every day to help keep things moving ,advice from Dr. Buie our GI doctor. That might help if you havent done it already. Our DAN doctor told me yesterday that sometimes constipation happens at the begining of the diet and then it resolves itself. Hope this helps! Guest guest
My son's doctor recently recommended Oxypowder for cleaning out the intestines and colon. It makes some pretty remarkable claims of weight loss too. My doc uses it on her two sons who have autism. April. Guest guest
Hi --we are really newbies here too but I wanted to let you know my 2.75 year-old ASD son had diarrhea that improved further with ASD. My almost 1.5 year old NT son has been severely constipated for over six months. The first day on the diet he had diarrhea. Since then all has been fine--no screaming, forcing, suppositories, etc. All this with lots of applesauce and bananas--I would have never thought it would work Another Newbie Question - Constipation I have noticed the intro diet and first few foods are those I associated with helping loose stools, rather than constipation. Dear , Our daughter use to pendulum swing from diarrhea to true hard and true constipation to pseudo constipation....when her gut would just not move...even though she truly wasn't " constipated " . SCD has taken it all way, and helps to regulate the intestines for all of us. This is what we did: When constipated we just added more fruit purées and water into the diet, also using watered down apple cider. WE also used Nordic Naturals Fish Oil, this seemed to help too/not over doing it. I like Nordic Naturals because it is free of mercury and heavy metals. I am sure others may be able to help you more too. Guest guest
I just went to Oxypowder's website, www.oxypowder.com/ Accordingly, here are the ingredients in " Oxypowder " : <<Complex Magnesium compound 3,425mg * Organic Germanium-132 27.5mg * Natural Citric Acid 125mg >> Looks like it gives a SUPER mega-dose of magnesium... but it doesn't say what form. Probably mag oxide and citrate as those are the most laxative, least absorbably and the cheapest. Could even be sulphate (epsom salts)... it doesn't say. Anyway, whatever form it is, it's a GIGANTIC dose. I personally would feel uneasy about using this very often. Well, to be honest, I would not ever consider giving this to my daughter, and she does tend to be more constipated on SCD. According to their website, " Germanium 132 " is: << We have recently increased the effectiveness of our Oxy-Powder product with the addition of " Organic Germanium-132 " which is made up of the elements germanium, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. Organic germanium-132, technically bis-beta-carboxyethyl germanium sesquioxide, is also known as Ge-132. High levels of the mineral are found in shelf fungus, ginseng, garlic, comfrey, and watercress. Ge-132 is claimed to have immuno-stimulatory and other health benefits. Germanium has been described as one of the greatest secrets in the field of nutritional medicine. It has been labeled " Good for just about any health condition " . Germanium is a mineral with an atomic weight of 32. We are now the only company in the world to provide Germanium with a stabilized oxygen product. Oxy-Powder will now release more oxygen and have a broad range of health benefits. >> I have never heard of it, but I'm no expert. I'm more than a little sceptical about anything that claims to be " good for just about any health condition " . I am wondering if it would be legal on SCD? Not really sure. I *could* venture a guess as to what Elaine Gottschall's opinion of this product would be... but I think I will keep my mouth shut. Can't see any problem with the citric acid, in terms of the diet, though it seems like a lot. As far as claims of weight loss, hmmmm.... I would have to wonder if it just makes ALL of your food move on through without being properly broken down and nutrients being absorbed. I have no idea if that's the case, but I'm wary. My personal take on this is.... at $43 a pop, despite their purported " Dr. Group's 100% Poop It Out Guarantee " , I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. My humble opinion. Guest guest
Some kids do start SCD with constipation problems, rather than diarrhea.... both are signs of gut disbiosis. You're right, starting SCD can tend to increase problems with constipation. There is a " constipation protocol " on Elaine's website: www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info that you might want to be prepared to use. I also agree with on the use of magnesium citrate. Adding a few hundred mgs of that has helped my daughter tremendously. Guest guest
Thank you to everyone for your advice! I have been anxious about this, but am feeling a bit better. I missed the article about constipation on Elaine's website - it is helpful!
Guest guest
Dear April, I was told that SCD alone has this ability to " clean " out the gut, plus stop the vicious cycle, even help detox, heal away food intolerances, and do much, much more when implemented the way the book tells us to do it. I would suggest doing SCD first. Many DAN! doctors and physicians do not understand how SCD works. SCD also helps those overweight to regulate back down to the proper weight and those under weight to gain back up to the proper weight. It is truly a God send for so many problems. Try to do SCD with no infractions for one month....and see if it works. This is the only way you will truly ever know if it will help your boys or you. Start over with intro...and take a shot at it again. We are truly seeing success in our autistic daughter...we are SCD keepers! Do searches on Elaine Web site and learn more about how SCD works. We all make mistakes...try to forget about it and move on to healing. Hope this helped, Antoinette (celiac) mom to Kiki (celiac autistic) 2/06 For information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, please read the book _Breaking the Vicious Cycle_ by Elaine Gottschall and read the following websites: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info<http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/\ > and http://www.pecanbread.com<http://www.pecanbread.com/>
