Guest guest
My son - age 5- on SCD since mid April for multi food allergies/intolerances, asthma and stomach problems started goat yogurt about 2 (?I think?) weeks ago. He did really well with the small amounts of goat yogurt for several days. Thinking it would go bad fast, I made a lot of custards and souffle bread to use it up. He had a lot of those items w/ goat yogurt and a nice size bowl of the yogurt mixed with applesauce and cooked strawberries (weird combo, but he likes it) the last day of goat yog. That night he was pretty wheezy and had to use his asthma medicine so I figured I way overdid the yogurt that day. Knowing I was running out of goat's milk yogurt, I had a batch of organic cow's milk/organic cream incubating ready for the next day. He ate a few spoonfuls for 3 days and each night had some wheezing, one night really bad requiring his inhaler. No stomach upset. Behaviorwise, I have been shocked! The boy who never wants to play with toys and only wants to watch TV or play video games all day (we don't let him of course) gave up afternoon TV time -voluntarily- to happily play with his sister outside. You have to know him to know how big a change in behavior this is. This is headline making news in our family! Ordinarily I would yank any food that makes him wheeze right out of his diet. (I almost did that with bananas at the start, but Antoinette wrote me and encouraged me to keep them in and she was right- the wheezing stopped.) Plus, I feel the yogurt is doing something beneficial in there because of the behavior change. No yogurt today and he's been a bit more back to whiny, " I wannaaaa watch teee-veee, I'mmmm boooorrrred. " -that kind of stuff, but also no wheezing so far. So, I figure the cow's milk yogurt is out for him for now- but it was so nice and delicious I will continue that for me. Should I retry the goat yogurt since maybe the wheezing was a die off sign? On the other hand, aren't inhaler's yeast promoting? Am I cancelling the yogurt's benefits out by having to use it some? Hope this makes sense- typing fast while supper is cooking. Guest guest
Janet, It's GREAT to hear about your " headline news " ! That warms the heart and gives us all the momentum to keep on keepin' on. On the goat yogurt, it seems like you *may* have let him have too much, too fast. I would re-try the goat. He would not have gotten any probiotic benefit from the cooked items (the bread, etc.) but it may have been too soon to challenge his gut with the dairy itself. Yeah, the wheezing could have been die-off... and might have gone away. Next time, I would just suggest a small amount daily... for a few weeks. SLOWLY add a bit more. It will last about three weeks in the fridge. Patti Yep- another yogurt question.... <<I feel the yogurt is doing something beneficial in there because of the behavior change. >> <<Should I retry the goat yogurt since maybe the wheezing was a die off sign?>> We Made Changes Your Yahoo! You can often react to the yogurt without it being a severe type of allergy. I get a swollen waistline and stuffy nose from it sometimes, but the benefit to my " operating system " is well worth a few seconds of temporary discomfort. Same thing happens from time to time with cow cheese. > Carol F. Celiac, MCS, Latex Allergy, EMS SCD 6 years
Guest guest
Thanks Carol & Patti, That's what I was thinking, but wanted confirmation from those who had seen or heard of the different types of die off. Now that I know it lasts 3 weeks, I can really stretch that stuff out- Good to know! Of course, he loves and begs for it so I will have to hide it in the top/back of the fridge from him! Janet, mom to Cody- SCD since 4-17-06- food allergies/intolerances- asthma, mostly gone- eczema, gone- chronic loose stools even 2 yr GF, GONE! > > > Janet, > > Yeah, the wheezing could have been die-off... and might have gone > > away. Guest guest
Dear Janet, this is just wonderful news about your CODY! Our one daughter coughed during die off, had a runny nose and a eczema like rash. It lasted much of the first two months, and then vanished. Be patient because food intolerances take time to " heal out of " , when they where caused by a leaky damaged gut. I hope that you continue your success and eating of the goat yogurt, to see if like us these strange reactions VANISH. When we feared that the " die off " reaction was casein, we took the yogurt out! A BIG OOPS. Kiki started to regress and autistic symptoms reemerged. This is when I discovered that it was " die off " and not dairy reactions! We got the courage and put back in the goat yogurt. She had one more " baby " like die off reaction, and became much, much happier and active. The most unbelievable is our " mute " and asd daughter was and is still always sounding like a baby chimp...she is trying desperately to learn how to talk now! She doesn't stop! Three month set back wasn't fun, but are back on track again! To us the SCD TM yogurt has worked magic. We are getting our daughter back. Best to you! Antoinette and family of five (SCD 2/06) (add, adhd, autism, celiac, malabsorption, multiple food sensitivities and more)
