We used ela-max plus with Leila's last blood draw and had great success. I put

the cream on her approximately 1 hour before the blood draw and she was stuck in

the groin area (they needed about 15cc's and she is not an easy stick). She

fussed a little when the tech held her down, but then didn't even react when

they put the needle in. No crying whatsoever. We will use this again! Hope

you find something that helps Cody.

question about numbing creams

Ok--now that Cody is allergic to EMLA cream, we have to find something else.

Dr. Milla suggested trying ela-max cream first, and if that doesn't do the

trick, we will try a spray that I believe is a Lidocaine 10% spray. Anyone have

any experience with either of these? The ER used a lidocaine 2% gel on him, and

we again tried it tonight, but that did NOTHING as far as numbing goes. I even

tried it on my own arm to see, and would peel back the bandage every 15 minutes,

and I saw no numbing even after an hour.

Any suggestions or advice would be MUCH appreciated!!

Thanks!

I'm a very hard stick and they usually have to dig a while to place an iv

correctly. The best experiece I ever had was at a dentists office where they

used what they called nitrogen spray before placing the iv. (I was having my

nasty wisdom teeth taken out).

They recently used emla on Patti (2wcf) and it didn't work at all. :-( I guess

we'll be on the hunt for something else for her as well.

I'm thinking that is possibly what our doc was talking about. He said the

spray immediately numbs the skin for a short while, and there is no waiting

at all. I hope we can get that stuff!

,

The stuff you are talking about is called ethyl chloride. I included a link

so you could take a look at the rx information. I have limited experience using

this with children, but it worked well when I did. Maybe your doc can get some

of this.

Thanks LOTS, Keeley!! I am going to check into getting this. We need to

access him, and it's getting ridiculous trying to find something to numb him

with. Ugh!! I am checking to see if anyone around here carries it. I have

already called our clinic and left a message for them to get him a

prescription for it.
