Guest guest
Cody has always had those too, but also, my sister has had them all her life. And she doesn't have CF. Cody's get darker when he isn't feeling well and when he gets dehydrated, and also when he is overtired. I've always wondered about them too. Guest guest
They are called " allergic shiners " and usually indicate an environmental allergy - dust, mold, pollen, pet dander, and the like. Interestingly, it was our optometrist who mentioned to me that (my child without CF) had them, and he knew what they were. )O( mama to , 2yo, w/CF, and , 4yo, no CF dark circles under eyes my youngest daughter; katelyn has c.f. and has always had dark circles under her eyes. none of her clinic docs can tell me why she has them. i wondered about what caused them and what if anything can i do to get rid of them. if anyone can help i appreciate it. thanks--beth, mother of 3 amanda 10 nocf, ashley 6 nocf, and katelyn 3 wcf. Guest guest
It has always been my understanding (well, since Ricky had his sinus problems a few years ago) that dark circles under they eyes are pretty indicative of sinus problems. That is, pressure in the sinus cavities causing bruising under the skin. This might not always be the case but that was what was going on with Ricky. YOu might want to ask Katelyn's pulmonologist, and they might refer her to a visit with an ENT just to be sure. By the way, I saw that ya'all were talking about sinus surgery. Ricky had sinus surgery when he was four, and the doctor told us at the time that because he would not let us do sinus washes that he'd need another sinus surgery within a year. Well, he never did, and in fact his sinuses have been fairly clear, just a few flare-ups every winter. So just because a CF person has sinus surgery once doesn't mean they have to have it repeatedly, even though many do. Guest guest
I was told they are indicative of congestion in the sinus'. Rosemary in NY with 3 children (13, 10.6 and 6.6) with CF. Guest guest
Abby has these circles as well, but her mother and I both have a little of it too. My other two have it to a lesser degree than Abby. Guest guest
One of my closest friends with CF (she died in 2000) always told me that whenever she got dark circles under her eyes, then she knew she needed more salt. So she'd take a salt tablet and the circles always went away by the next day. She always said her dad was the same way. One time I was visiting their home and her dad made a comment that he must have forgotten a salt tablet because his eyes were dark that day. We were always told the same thing as the rest of you: allergies, sinus infections, lack of sleep, too much caffeine, dehydration... They're all factors. The skin under the eyes is really thin so whatever is going on underneath is easily seen. When my sinuses are acting up, the skin under my eyes puffs up and darkens. Guest guest
That's what our doctors call them too! What a small world! They are going to do the full allergy test on Christian because there is something in the basic test that he is still not responding with medicine. Guest guest
My daughter with CF also has the same problem. Some say she doesn't sleep well since at times she coughs throughout the night. I hope some one out there can answer your question and I will know too. sandy Mother of three daughters 4 yo w/CF - Kenedy, 5 yo no CF - and 6 yo w/CF - Kaylee
Guest guest
Beth My daughter used to suffer with dark circles and when she did we found she was salt depleted and dehydrated. So we either increased her salt tablets and gave her extra glucolyte and now she is fine. Hope this helps Cathy (Mum to 7yowcf) dark circles under eyes > my youngest daughter; katelyn has c.f. and has always had dark circles under her eyes. none of her clinic docs can tell me why she has them. i wondered about what caused them and what if anything can i do to get rid of them. if anyone can help i appreciate it. thanks--beth, mother of 3 amanda 10 nocf, ashley 6 nocf, and katelyn 3 wcf. > > >
