Guest guest
Dear Kathi, Congratulations on your surgery and your giving up smoking and drinking coffee! I too smoked for about 18 years. I quit smoking through hypnosis in Dec of 1999. My surgery was July 19th. It took me about 9 days to get my 'pep' back again. What was funny, my sis/roommate/had mgb same day as me/friend Joyce said that she too was tired until the Thursday, 1 week after our surgery. I don't know what it was but I felt like superwoman that day. So, maybe by Sunday you will start feeling like you again 10 times better minus the cigarette and caffeine habit. Best wishes. Love, T. > First, I have smoked for about 20 years. Guest guest
Congratulations Kathi on no more smokes. I quit smoking 2 years ago this October. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. Except leave a no good husband! lol Anyway, back to the story at hand. I used Zyban for 10 days and then just quit. I had a very hard time but I used the support groups online. They are out there just like this group. THE SUPPORT GROUPS REALLY HELPED ME! You go through withdrawals and you feel your real emotions for the first time since you got addicted to nicotine. You will have a lot of weepy days, you chest will ache with need and then it will start getting better. It is best to have someone who has quit to help talk you through the hard times. But Holly, the most important part is,,,YOU HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT... If you quit because someone else is making you or someone else wants you to quit, it won't stick. I've done that several times before. This time I wanted to quit! I was 47 years old and healthy! I knew I couldn't stay that way and keep smoking. So I quit gained 5o ppounds and now hear I am in a new support groups. But Hey, I'm getting it ALL together. Gonna make a new " Healthy " Dinah lol Just my 2 cents worth! That is exactly my question..I don't smoke a lot and I can quit anytime I want to..I do it every time I am pregnant..i just LIKE to smoke and don't want to quit my measly 4 cigarettes a day. So..I was asking does Dr R say we HAVE to quit?? And is there a medical reason related to our new stomachs that we should?? Holly

Guest guest
Hi, my name is . PLEASE tell me how you did it. I am scheduled for surgery 090600 and for the life of me I cannot quit smoking. Well, I won't say I cant quit. I have to quit. The only thing is, I am running out of time. Did you have problems breathing during the surgery? I have shortness of breath now and I know someone reading this will say how stupid can one get. I am working hard. I have failed at everything else I attempted to do and I think this is just a mind thing. Please give me any advice you can. I only have a few more days. I am trying to lose a pound or two also. Take care of yourself and may God bless you is my prayer. (waiting to start a new life)
Guest guest
Hi , I quit smoking 12 years ago cold turkey and have never had one since. The best advice I can give you is...DO NOT TELL SMOKERS YOU ARE QUITTING.I know this may seem silly, but make up any excuse you can not to let 'them' know. They will sabotage you,not meaning to,mind you, just their #'s are dwindling and they are grasping hold of every last smoker they can hang onto.I know you think I am just joking, and I am trying to put a light spin on it,however I am serious.Take it day by day and do not let people who smoke know you are trying to quit. Guest guest
I'm soooo sorry--I totally missed this message until I started looking through back posts on the web! No, there were no complications at all. And it seems like I just woke up a non-smoker! Even when I get frustrated, I don't want a cigarette anymore (please God let it stay that way!). Hubby & I have been able to smell it on each other since we quit smoking in the house, but it always smelled good...made us want one...I hugged him tonight and it smelled AWFUL! Have you tried Zyban? I was using that before surgery & had cut way back...it helps!
Guest guest
, I honestly don't think you should be trying to quit smoking and dieting at the same time. Too stressful. Quiting smoking is a very stressful thing. We use nicotine as a crutch for everything. If we are sad, we smoke, upset, we smoke, unsure, we smoke, get the picture? There are some wonderful sites on the internet to give you tips and support while youare quitting nicotine. Do a search for " quit smoking " Also get some Zyban. Wellbutrin is the same thing and your insurance will pay for Wellbutrin but not for Zyban. I understand how hard quitting nicotine can be, but you have to really want it! Good luck to you. I quit 20 months ago. Dinah in Alabama > Hi, my name is . PLEASE tell me how you did it. I am scheduled for > surgery 090600 and for the life of me I cannot quit smoking. Guest guest
Hi ! I too am a former smoker, however, its only been 2 weeks. I quit last year for 8 months when a friend of mine not much older than me and about the same weight as me had a heart attack, it scared the bageeezers (sp?)out of me.., then due to some major stress in my life I turned to smoking because I had already gained 20 lbs with the 8 months of not smoking. It was harder for me this time to quit because I really enjoy smoking ..well..all except for the smell, taste and look of it..hehehehe. Anyway, someone told me that you do not heal as fast when you are a smoker, I dont know how true that is...but I am sooo afraid of springing a leak, that I want my belly to heal as fast as possible, so I sat down one day and asked myself, is this MGB surgery REALLY that important to me? OHHH MY GOSH YES...then I realized that if I cant stop smoking for something that I thought I wanted so badly...how on earth will I be able to get healthy after the surgery? Anyway,,dont mean to lecture, cuz smoking, like food is VERY addicting and its hard, but if you want something bad enough, you can do it...just keep reminding yourself of that. Tell yourself that its a new beginning...a NEW you ...a new you that does not smoke ! I wish you well...and if you ever need to have a " nic " fit...email me or call ...we'll get thru it together. :0) >From: Beamon@... >Reply-To: MiniGastricBypass (AT) egroups (DOT) com >To: MiniGastricBypass (AT) egroups (DOT) com >Subject: Re: Questions about Smoking >Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 23:37:07 EDT > >Hi, my name is . Guest guest
You know Janet this is true of a lot of things! My husband use to drink, when people found out he had quit, alcohol was coming out of the walls. People who never had money before seemed to have FREE beer! I am so glad he didn't let that stop him, and I'm really glad it didn't stop you! I've never smoked but my parents did and so does my husband and I know it has to be a really hard thing to stop. My mom told me once after she had quit smoking for 14 years that she had never seen a day pass that she didn't want one! She finally gave in and went back to smoking and she died less than a year later.(She had heart disease)! Just my 2 cents. Guest guest
Thank you Dinah. I know I should quit. But you are so right. Dieting and quitting smoking are two of the hardest things alone to try to stop. let alone attempting them both at the same time. I am so accustomed to failure, I am not succeeding at either one of them. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I am just concerned that I may have breathing problems when it comes time for my surgery. How did you do it? Please pray for me on this. May God bless you is my prayer. (waiting to start a new life)
Guest guest
Thanks Janet for the advice. I know exactly what you mean. I have repeatedly told my co-workers that I am trying to quit and they never fail to get me to go out with them to smoke. I even stopped buying them and the give them to me. Thanks again. Please take care of yourself and may God bless you is my prayer. (waiting to start a new life)
