Guest guest
Anoinette, You will probably need to go to a HFS for Maple extract in alcohol. That's where I got mine. Charlene ! Hi guys, I am not very happy right now. We just accidentally screwed up! Frontier Maple Flavoring says: Glycerin, water, and natural flavors. NATURAL FLAVORS is a red flag. So I went to www.frontiercoop.com<http://www.frontiercoop.com/> and found out that this is what is in it: Botanical Name: Ingredients: Glycerin, water and natural flavors (contains corn and barley gluten and soy). Kosher: KSA Certified Common Name: Maple Flavor Bar Code: 0-89836-23081-2 I used this darn in my peanut butter brownies, before I realized that it might be illegal. Thank God it was only 1/2 teaspoon full per the entire batch! Thank God, Kiki didn't eat any of them! Only me and my son ate them. Moral of story do not trust " natural flavorings " !!!!!!!!! Carol, you warned me....this is why I wondered... a little too late though. So what kind of MAPLE flavoring did Elaine want us to use for flavoring the honey?????? Could this little bit be making my son a goof? All night he has been acting ADHD again and not listening! Has anybody had this happen with such a small amount? So far I am not feeling anything but very tired...but this is not new LOL!. Thanks, Antoinette and family of five SCD 2/06 (add, adhd, autism, and malabosorption syndrome/celiac and more)
Guest guest
Hi Antoinette. I'd guess that even a small amount of an multi-illegal (corn, barley gluten and soy) could cause a reaction in someone--especially a small someone, but I wonder if your son might be reacting to the peanut butter instead? If he normally tolerates peanut butter well, then I'd think it was the illegal maple flavoring. Tracey Bunce wrote: Hi guys, I am not very happy right now. We just accidentally screwed up! Guest guest
Tracey and all, I just learned off serve that others have had reactions to such a tiny amount. My son was a hyper basket case last night. Going back to making inapropriate screaming and crashing into things. This morning I have diarrhea, almost didn't make it to the bathroom. So much fun. Off serve I have also been told to up the yogurt and accidolphilus. I was also told if the infraction is caught in time, enzymes can even be helpful. But we cuaght this one too late. Thank God it was only 1 teaspoon of the junk! I will be more careful. Goes to show, that meds can do it too with illegals in them, if this little bit can light the fire of the vicious cycle. We don't eat much peanut butter, but I am certain that this was not the problem. We have ate these brownies before without this stupid maple junk in them and did fine. Thaks for the insight though. Guest guest
It takes such a small amount of illegal for our son to be on the edge or go over. He has been on a kick the last 3 weeks of looking for stuff in places like on the floor at the store, church, outside at the neighbors. We borrowed our church van for a day and he found a tiny red candy and ate it. GRRRRRRR Was not a fun night. h is our watch dog and tells me when she sees him but of course it is to late. I have ordered a used video of the Magic School Bus Whats for lunch. We are going to view this together and am hoping that he will be able to get a better understanding of what happens to him when he eats something that I have not put my stamp of approval on which is nothing that doesn't come from home. It has gotten so I don't buy anything except fresh, raw and occationally organic frozen. It is a pain but worth it. I do buy Frontier extracts but don't know of any of the 'flavorings' will be legal. Guest guest
Antoinette: Sorry you had a rough night. I should have mentioned that enzymes can help with an infraction if taken soon enough thereafter, but I was under the impression that you didn't use enzymes anymore because of prior problems with them. Clay got hold of a plain bagel and had eaten about 1/4 of it before being caught about 3 weeks ago. I went nuts imagining the worst as he'd been gluten free with no gluten infractions since 3/05. I got enzymes into him about 1 hour and 15 min after the infraction (i had them on hand but never used them before). Then I waited for the worst---it never came. I was shocked and very thankful. He had no negative reaction at all. He also takes legal acidofillus daily, but I'm too chicken to move on to yogurt yet. Anyway, I hope he feels better today. Guest guest
I talked to Frontier about their natural flavors, they called me after I e-mailed them about our concerns about the Maple Flavoring containing all those things hidden in the name " natural flavorings " . They appologized and acted truly understanding of the situation. They receive many phone calls from people like us. Many on the SCDiet. They said that in the NEAR future their labeling is going to reflect what is in their products. Antoinette (celiac) SCD 2/
Guest guest
Dear Tracey and all, I truly apprecate your concerns. I feel much better and my son is acting more normal. We are going to go back to intro for a few days to cause a die off. The only enzymes that cuases people with intestinal injury distress is PROTEASE. This one cause us much trouble. This is the only one that Elaine did not like or trust. We do use other enzymes on occasion. Just not the protease. I keep protease free SCD safe enzymes on hand just for infractions, but I thought it was too late. It had been several hours. Next time we will take it anyways, after hearing the success you had. Hopefuly there will not be a next time. But life is life, it is bound to happen. I honestly understand your fears about the yogurt. WE where casein free for 5 years prior to trusting the SCD yogurt. Talk about paranoid! And rightly so, it caused serious problems in this house. I would never try liquid milk! It is not legal anyways. Yet truly, we are able to tolerate the SCD goat yogurt. Maybe you should try an experiment. The SCD ice cream is a true treat! Guest guest
Hi Antoinette, Here is an old post from the Lyris where Elaine spoke about maple extract and *not* recomending it for ASD. Lucy (Lucy's kitchen shop) used a little but she had been doing well and was on the SCD for 10 yrs at that point. http://lyris.dundee.net/read/messages?id=249386#249386 The Lyris files are a great place to search for info because Elaine's comments are saved there. http://lyris.dundee.net/read/search/advanced?forum=elaineschildren Sheila, SCD 2/01, UC 22yrs mom of and > > I am not very happy right now.
