Guest guest
Sorry but I need help with bm analysis and what it means and how it should guide my SCD diet plans for my daughter. She is about 12-13 days SCD. She is having BMs about every 3 days now (had been having every day). They are now normal color! YEAH!! They are still smelly. They seem to have yeast in them and some stretchy bands (is that mucous or yeast?). They are not much larger in size. They are about 3/4 formed and about 1/4 diarrhea. The last 1/4 that is loose has undigested food. Tonight I noticed spinach and carrot bits (that had been chopped and steamed). What does it mean if it has been digested through part of the stool but not all? Is that a sign of developing intolerance over a period of exposure? Or just a motility issue - the stuff in there longer is getting better digested, stuff passing through faster not? I'm using enzymes so I wonder if that could be an influence too? I have heard some people talk about food rotation - is this why they do that? Thanks for any insight. I am planning to order legal probios and to order yogurt starter to help grow some good bacteria!! Jen
Guest guest
Jen, It sounds to me like your daughter is not yet able to tolerate and digest carrots and spinich... at least not in the form you are serving them. If you're seeing undigested bits, she may not be chewing well enough. Many of us have had to resort to pureeing some of the veggies... and either hiding them in meatloaf, chicken pancakes, etc.... or adding the puree to soups, stews. Yes the " strechy " stuff has been reported by some to be yeast that had " passed on " , so to speak. The variation in stool consistency is pretty common at this point. It sounds like you're on the right track.... but you may need to mash well or puree some of those things. The goal is to make ALL food as easy to digest as possible at this point. Her gut has brand new exposed and tender tissues in there... that are needing to get used to working properly again. Yes, it will be ESSENTIAL to get some good flora going on in there. Guest guest
Hi Jen Is she having carrot and spinach every day? It is still very early in the diet for your daughter. She has come a long way in only 13 days. Some of the problem may be that she isn't tolerating steamed veggies yet and may need the carrots cooked longer. So, you could either 1.) wait a couple of days to see if she just needs more time to heal or 2.)cook the carrots (boil) longer Does she receive spinach every day some do have trouble with it if given too soon. Guest guest
I had been giving her about a tablespoon of spinach/carrot steamed shredded in her morning omelette, every day. I get worried about too much protein and since her yeast is bad I get worried about too much fruit. So I have been trying to balance things out. Today I decided to puree the spinach/carrot mix with the egg. I think she is not chewing things well - so that is probably part of the issue but your right about her GI tract being sensitive. I had introduced some steamed pineapple and a couple pieces came through, so that would have to be steamed and pureed too. It seems the pear, apple, banana are doing fine. Boiling the veggies longer may be important. She has loved broccolli forever and seems to do okay with that. Thanks. It helps to get feedback. Go slow seems key, introduce the probios, cook well, make it so she can digest easy! I hope I am getting the hang of it! I want this girl to get strong and grow!! And lots of other things too!. Jen, mom to Evie 3 1/2, diagnosed PDD-NOS (basically high functioning autism) SCD almost 2 weeks!! Oh, And the biting has decreased dramatically! SHe did well in ABA today!! Pineapple is pretty fibrous and pureeing it may help - on the other hand she just may need a few days at some really easy to digest foods before proceeding with more complex ones. Introducing only one new food every few days helps to give you the clearest picture which foods are tolerated and which you need to wait a little on. You have a lot of different foods added already so it is kind of hard to tell which may be a problem. It seems the pear, apple, > banana are doing fine. Boiling the veggies longer may be > important. She has loved broccolli forever and seems to do okay > with that. If she continues to have trouble even when the fruit and veggies are boiled & pureed try removing broccoli for a while since it belongs to the cabbage family. Cabbage family veggies (cauliflower, kale cabbage, brocc etc.) are more complex and can cause trouble at the beginning of the diet when you still have loose stool. Guest guest
Okay - so it sounds like I need to relax a bit about what she is eating (nutrition wise, carb/protein wise) and just think of it as gut healing. I know I am probably worrying too much about giving her a variety of food, making sure she has veggie/carb( inveggies not as grain obviously). I will keep an eye on things. Back off if needed! > > Hi Jen, > > > I had been giving her about a tablespoon of spinach/carrot steamed > > shredded in her morning omelette, every day. Guest guest
Hope I'm not repeating what someone alreayd wrote, but from our experience, carrots were very hard to digest. Even pureed carrot soup. It looked the same going out as it went in. We still don't do too many carrots, even though we seem to do well on other veggies. Carrots are very starchy. Also, in case comeone hasn't mentioned it, it takes a lot of protein to heal a gut. I don't know if you are doing scd with her or not, but I couldn't get enough meat when I started and neither could my daughter. I felt much better after people started mentioning that it takes quite a bit of protein to heal tissue. This is just our experience, hope it helps.
