Guest guest
Angie, I'm not sure what to tell you. I have never heard of anyone suffering pain to this degree as they are beginning SCD. If you had a serious GI condition, that was already causing you some trouble, then pain might be understandable... at least somewhat. And, of course, one would expect GI pain... not leg pain. Something really seems very wrong here... and I must say, I'm entirely stumped. I know it would be a very unlikely coincidence, but I'm wondering if the pain could possibly be caused by something unrelated to the diet, that just happened to come on just as you began? I am not sure the cramping you're experiencing is actually in the muscles... I am guessing it must be?? The only other thing I would tell someone who is having muscle cramps is to make sure they are getting enough calcium. You are taking a LOT of magnesium...are you used to taking that much? Perhaps it needs to be balanced by calcium? Usually, magnesium is taken in a proportion of about half the milligram dosage as calcium. That's not SCD protocol... that's just my recollection and what I'm familiar with. The only other thing I would throw out there would be dehydration. I guess that depends on how hot the weather is where you are... and how much you are drinking. Are you getting enough salt, etc. ?? Please note... I am not a doctor and am not trying to give you medical advice. I just don't know what else to suggest. I think if the extreme pain continues, and you think it is caused by the diet, I would recommend stopping for a while.... until you are sure what's going on. I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. Patti Die-off or something else? My family of four went 100% SCD July 1 in support of my extreme ADHD 9 year old son who has malabsorption problems. Both sons (the other is 12) and my husband are doing okay---some weakness, some stomach upset, some irritability. I am suffering greatly. I am having horrendous cramping from my hips to just above my knees. It had bothered me Saturday night a little, but last night I awoke around 2 a.m. and have not been back to sleep since (it is 11 on Monday night). I cannot lay down without extreme pain and sitting isn't great. Walking is good after about 20 minutes, but otherwise I'm in an extreme amount of pain. I've been taking epsom salt baths. I've been using a heating pad. I'm taking 1000 mg/ magnesium/day, plus Freeda vitaminis plus Vit C (1000 mg.) AND activated charcoal. Yes, all legal supplements and yes taking apart from the charcoal. I'm drinking tons of water. I'm still in agony. I spoke to my son's doctor, and she wasn't sure what to do either. I understand the value of this diet, particularly for my son. My son and I have been mostly SCD for a couple of months, but waited to go 100% until I could learn about it, convert the familiy off of 18 years of vegetarianism (still learning how to cook), get the family through a trip to Paris and my son through a week of drama camp. I knew that when we did it, we wanted to do it right and that I needed total control. We've seen remarkable improvements in my son (who is also taking enzymes, probiotics, and cod liver oil----as per doctor.) As I was sobbing on the phone with the doctor today, she struggled with the dilemma of if this is die-off, I need this diet for reasons we didn't know, but also she cannot tolerate me being in this much pain. But she is new to this diet, too. (A doctor at the lab who did my son's CSA suggested the book to her. She has read it, as have I, but never had a patient on the diet before.) But I'm in so much pain I'm beginning to question my sanity. Is there anything we are overlooking that we could do? I really cannot be in pain like this and function. Please help, if you have anything to offer. Guest guest
Hi, Angie. Welcome to the list. I am wondering about the activated charcoal. How much are you taking? Aside from the leg pain, are you suffering from stomach cramping, pain, etc? Is this why you are taking it? Too much activated charcoal can cause muscle cramping. This sounds more severe than that, however. Are you running a fever? I echo Patti's comments on calcium and dehydration (which I know you said that you were drinking 'tons of water', but activated charcoal can cause dehydration). Low potassium levels can cause leg cramping, as well. But, your vitamin should cover the potassium levels adequately. Not sure about the calcium. Are you taking the enzymes/probiotics/cod liver oil that your son is taking? Might be a good idea? I am going to tread the poop terrain that we so often do on this list---sorry! But, are you constipated? How are you bowel movements? Have they been normal? Constipation can cause lower back and upper leg pain. Call your doctor if you have constipation with a fever and intolerable pain. Could it be a urinary tract/kidney infection? How is your urine output? The pain can radiate to the legs. Also, the standard SCD questions---what are you eating? Have you added yogurt? Did you start with the Intro diet--if not, maybe going back to the intro diet for a few days would be beneficial--you probably do not feel like eating much at this point anyway. I am not a medical professional. I hate to have you in so much pain. I am hoping that if you are still at this level of pain today, that you seek medical attention. I will be thinking of you! Sorry it has been so rough, and I hope you find relief soon. Guest guest
Hi,sorry to hear of your pain, all I am wondering is the vegetarian thing, I was also veg. for 22 years and very recently started eating meat again, stupidly I chose lamb and suffered immensely afterwards,( how I expected my body to still have the enzymes to deal with meat after 22 years is beyond me !) did you suddenly eat meat? just a thought, I'm new too, love Josie x > > My family of four went 100% SCD July 1 in support of my extreme ADHD 9 year old son > who has malabsorption problems. Guest guest
Dear Angie, I don't know what is causing your pain. I am not a doctor either. I also only have four months on the diet too. So I am just learning. But wanted to share that I suffered miserably too! YOU ARE NOT ALONE. JUST HORRIBLE PAIN!!!!! The kind that makes you think you need an ER or doctor. I assumed it was transition. It seems that the cramps would kill me at times. I don't know if they where gas cramps. IBS or what! I still don't know. The doctors where not able to help either. I didn't die though, I made it through it some how. Sometimes used the hot tub for pain several time a day! I truly do not know what to tell you to do for yours. The ER can't do much if it is caused by die off, even if we go, but you may have to! Use your commmon sense. It would be just horrible if you where over looking something else other than a very rough transition! But this is what I was told to do again I am not a doctor any thing I say do at your own risk: I became so desperate I called Lucy R at Lucy's Kitchen one day (Elaine had cured her). She told me to stop taking the enzymes with protease for starters. She also told me to use just ONE fleet enema to flush out possible things that could be making my pain worse. I also used activated charcoal, Epson salt baths (very hot for the pain), Heating Pads, Laying on my left side with knees bent to chest, in case it was gas. Plus, I stuck to the intro diet longer than most (10 days), I also used acidolphilus and yogurt as mentioned to eat in the book, plus Freed Vitamins. It did passed and I still do not know what caused it. My poops where rather strange though! It also had a horrible smell! If you where vegetarian before you went SCD, may be you need to introduce meats slower? I don't know for certain if even this is the problem. You are not insane! Trust your body and listen to what it may be telling you. It has been believed by some who have studied gut dysbiosis, that it may run in the mothers who have the children with this problem. Dr. Natasha -McBride M.D. says this in her book. IF she is right, you moe than likely need this diet as much as your son if not more. After this first die off I emerged a new women. I had more energy, less irritablitiy, less depression, and continued to heal from my diagnosis of Celiac Disease. I hope that you are feeling better soon! Guest guest
Sorry you are hurting so badly. I was digging around and have a few thoughts.. I take an electrolyte formula for fatiuge that is really great. It is just electrolytes, nothing else added. This has really helped with my fatigue and it is advertised to help with cramping. Here is a link. I get the regular e-lyte formula: http://www.elytesport.com/sportshealth/default.html Is the cramping on your back wrapping around to the front and down the back of your legs? If so it could be sciatica. This condition is excruciating-I have never experienced it firsthand but I use to work in a chiropractic office and saw it all the time. (I am not a doctor) It is causes by a pinched nerve in the lumbar spine (low back). Treatments vary but usually entails spinal adjustments, electrostimulation therapy to increase blood flow in the muscles and possibly acupuncture. You may have other vertabrae out of alignment too putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves that connect to your stomach. I have had that problem before. Maybe this isn't it, but I hope you find relief soon! Mandy > > > > My family of four went 100% SCD July 1 in support of my extreme ADHD 9 > year old son > > who has malabsorption problems. Can you describe what your typical daily mrenu consisted of before you started SCD? What were your actvities just oprior to starting SCD? This advice may not be univerally supported by the moderators, but if you are still in pain, I would revert to my previous diet and see if the pain subsides. Then try the SCD Intro Diet again (chicken soup. beef patties, gelatin, cheesecake etc.). I also never heard of such an extreme initial reaction. Please let us know how you are doing today. Carol F. Guest guest
Angie, I have never heard of anyone experiencing the type of pain that you are describing just from starting the diet. I would definitely advise going in to see a doctor. It is possible that the pain and diet change are related in some way. (I am not a doctor and don't know if they are or not.) But being in that much pain is CERTAINLY not typical. I would recommend that you make an appointment today to see a doctor. My husband woke up a week ago Sunday in an enormous amount of pain. By the end of the day, he resorted to going to the ER. If he had just switched diets, we might have thought the two were related since he didn't actually DO ANYTHING to cause the pain: no heavy lifting, no injury of any type. But somehow he managed to injure himself pretty badly doing absolutely nothing. Perhaps it was sciatica as was mentioned in a different post. He's been taking muscle relaxers and using an electrotherapy unit and he is doing much better. I am writing all of this to encourage you to find out if there is something else going on. Just because two things started at similar times doesn't mean that one is causing the other. I would definitely get checked by a doctor. I would hate for you to chalk this up to " die off " because it doesn't sound at all like any other description of a die-off reaction that I've ever heard. Please consider seeing your doctor for a full exam. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/
Guest guest
Angie and Patti, Leg cramping can be toxisity in your body and not enough fluids going in to flush it out. Angie, I know that you said that you were drinking a lot of water but you need a min of 1 oz of water for every 2 # you weigh. If you way 128# you need a MIN. of 8 full glasses, 8 oz each of water. I drink a gallon of water a day and if I go under this for more than a day I will spend my night walking trying to work out the cramps in my legs. Water is such an important part of the picture of health both getting healthy and staying healthy. The other thing is if you drink coffee or tea, these things dehydrate you so you need even more water. Hope this can help you evaluate whether the amount of water you are drinking really is a lot or not. Many people are so accustome to drinking other stuff that when they get 3 or 4 glasses of water in they think that the water system that they are on will go dry. <smile> Sandy M. > > Angie, > > I'm not sure what to tell you. Guest guest
1,000 mg of mag is a lot..why are you taking this much..It can cause cramping..Stop the mag for now and see if it helps.. You may wish to also only take 500 vit c for now until things settle... Keep taking the charcoal it will absorb the toxins... and yes I agree with Carol water but spread your drinking out .. may I ask if you are all on this amount of Mag ? Guest guest
No, not suddenly. We've been having meat about once a day for a month prior to going SCD. Guest guest
520 mg. of activated charcoal. Sometimes every two hours--but sometimes not because I don't want to interfere with taking magnesium. I am not having stomach cramping. I was taking a.c. to help with this pain---assuming die-of. But I wasn't taking it until the pain started, so the a.c. didn't start this. Low-grade 99.5 this morning. First time I've felt any bit feverish. I'm not taking any of the enzymes/cod live oil/probiotics that my son is. Poop talk: just once since Saturday morning. How to get this moving along more?? I've been constipated before in my life----don't feel constipated. Urine output seems fine. I've never had a uti. No yogurt. Saturday and Sunday: chicken soup as per p. 91 BTVC, eggs, homemade gelatin with legal grape juice, beef patty. Monday and today added to that bananas, homemade applesauce, homemade pearsauce, green beans, cooked carrots. I thought I was doing a little better today, but having been sitting/lying on my bed for just a bit handling bills/email, and I've ended up just sobbing. I just don't understand this. Angie > > Hi, Angie. Guest guest
And maybe cramping isn't the right word. Slight pain in lower back, greater pain in back of lower hips, great pain down backs of thighs. Cannot bend over to pick up anything.Improvement with hot baths and long walks, but then it builds back up, particularly if I sit or lie. Guest guest
Described food in a response just a few minutes ago. Yes, still in pain. Cannot even think right now---daily diet before was not a ton of junk----close to SCD for a couplpe of months but meat only about once a day. My activities were working (desk job---library book cataloger) and yoga and dance conditioning classes. Right now I cannot even see going in to work tomorrow. Guest guest
> > > Please consider seeing your doctor for a full exam. > And I guess I will check into that tomorrow. As this is 4th of July in USA, no one is available unless I went to er. And I think at an er, a doctor would just tell me to get off the weird diet and I wouldn't get any help. Guest guest
The way I was eating before this weekend was like SCD several months down the road. Now we've started at the beginning---intro diet for two days then adding cooked apples, pears, carrots, green beans, and raw very ripe bananas None of those are new to me, just all the cooking. Guest guest
funny example. as I do weigh 128. I'm not drinking any but water, except chicken broth. I would actually love a little tea, but we haven't added anything like that yet. But I do know that I am easily drinking 8/8 a day. no problem there. I've always been a big water drinker. Guest guest
It is usually on one side but it can be on both if the pinch is severe enough. Being that it is constant pain worse if you sit or lie I would say yes. The most pressure is put on your back in these positions, especially sitting. If you are comfortable with going to a chiropractor-ask around for referrals if you have never been- I would definitely have it checked out. It could also be a bulging disc in your low back which may be more indicative of pain on both sides. For this traction and adjustments are typically used. Until you can get an appointment I would recommend exactly what you have been doing. Try not to aggrevate it with it already being inflamed. Moist heat is better than dry heat if you have a heating pad. Put a moist towel-not dripping wet over your back and then put the heating pad over that. Or if you don't have a heating pad fill up a tubesock half full with rice tie a knot in it and put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. This will release some steam and give you moist heat. One last thing, if you have a 'donut' pillow to sit on those are great for sciatica. It takes some pressure off your low back that way. Again, I am not a medical professional, I have just dealt with this alot and this is what is recommended. What state are you in? I am in Texas and I may be able to recommend a good one. Good Luck! Guest guest
I went to this amount of magnesium on advice from doctor trying to solve this mystery. Why is magnesium seen as good and bad for cramping? I was trying to take so much vit c/mag to help with constipation. Other ideas welcome. Water drinking is very spread out, except for an almost full glass when I take the charcoal. Guest guest
Dear Angie, I had similar feelings a few months back. It seems all the loose stools led to a urinary tract infection. My back was killing me...on top of the colon and bathroom problems. You might want to check this out. I'm not saying this is a UTI for sure but maybe it should be ruled out. Hoping you feel better soon! Ronnie gus17mom wrote: > And maybe cramping isn't the right word. Slight pain in lower back, > greater pain in back > of lower hips, great pain down backs of thighs.
