Guest guest
hey folks . good info here, passing it along. Love & hugs, Grdmbev Re: question about e-mail hmmmm, I already sent him a e-mail but I have not gotten a response from him yet. Can you please forward this for me to the cfparents list? I would appreciate it. We are doing good, Tyler is enjoying Kindergarten Dawn ****************** Diaper rash happens when too much moisture softens the top layer of skin that protects the baby's bottom. The pH of the skins surface is normally neutral to slightly acidic and shifts to alkaline from alkali bile salts found in loose stools or contents in urine. When it shifts to alkaline it becomes a great place for bacteria (yeast) to grow, which then activates the white blood cells to try and kill off the bacteria, and when the white blood cells attack it causes inflammation and soreness. So to treat this you first need to create a dry environment. Then you can raise the pH of the skin by mixing 1/2 - 1 cup of vinegar to bath water, or 1/4 cup or so to water in a basin and sit the child in it for about 10 minutes. Then keep some ointment on the bottom to act as a barrier to keep moisture off. Dawn (gadget76@...) mom To Tyler 5 w CF
Guest guest
Sorry Bev, but this post doesn't make any sense. If you add vinegar to water, you LOWER the pH, not raise it, because vinegar is acidic. In the first paragraph she says the skin is neutral to slightly acidic but shifts to alkaline from exposure to feces and urine, which causes bacteria to grow. That's because combining feces and urine creates more ammonia, which is alkaline (higher pH). So she should have said, " Then you can LOWER the pH of the skin by mixing 1/2 to 1 cup vinegar to bath water... " The whole pH thing can be confusing, because while you want urine to be very slightly acidic to prevent bacteria from growing in the urinary tract, you don't want acidic lungs. And some researchers conclude that an overly acidic body is more prone to cancer. I bookmarked lots of pH things when I first began studying magnesium (an alkaline mineral). Here is a discussion among doctors about diaper rash and pH. And it even says that adding vinegar LOWERS pH.
