Guest guest
Hi group, Unfortunately, I didn't find you all until we were already given a recommendation for a helmet from our neurosurgeon. It is currently being made and will be ready tomorrow. However, since going through this process, I've gotten mixed reaction from our primary care pediatrician and our physical therapist (for right tilt, looking left tort). Our ped sent us to see the neurosurgeon really just as a comfort measure, but I think she was honestly shocked when I called back to tell them they have recommended a helmet. Then, I got a similar reaction from the PT. So, my question is, based on pictures I've posted (Plagio babies I -> Ian Bradley), what is your opinion? I don't know the exact degree of plagio, the dr. at the orthotics company only told me that it was " almost a cm " ; and unfortunately I didn't know at the time to ask for more specific information. Ian is about 7 1/2 months old. Thanks in advance for your help! Cinde Indpls, IN
Guest guest
Hi Cinde-- Welcome! So, if they said that the asymatry was off by almost a cm, that would probably mean about 10mm off, and that would be why they recommended the banding. I believe that means that Ian falls into the moderate category of Plagio. Taking a look at Ian's little photos, I'm not suprised that recommended the banding. I know that it can be hard when getting mixed information from different providers. You know best. Are you okay with the shape of your LO's head? Or would you like to try to get some correction? We banded at 11mm and got our little one down to 3mm which is in the normal range (normal being 0-3mm). It's great that you are working on the tort as well. Although we are out of the band, we are still working on a mild tilt. I was very interested to find out that the connection between the tort and plagio goes beyond just that they look one way....actually that muscle connects back behind the ear and can pull on the head, ears, etc. which can contribute to the plagio. Guest guest
He looks like a more mild case and by the measurements being off almost a cm, that would confirm it. Generally banding isn't recommended until the measurements are off more than 10mm. He's probably a borderline case and the neurosurgeon is pro banding so it was recommended. I wish they would have explained it all to you better as a borderline case so you could make the best informed judgement about whether or not to band. At his age you probably won't see any more correction though repositioning and PT alone. The good news is with the band he will only improve Lina Elaine (twin A) plagio & tort, 7 1/2 mos, 2 weeks second helmet.
