Hi there,

Re: drugs which cause pancreatitis.

I was prescribed Ramapril (also known as Tritace) - in the UK for hypertension.

Pancreatitis is not listed as a side-effect, but it caused an acute attack for

me. I also found that some pain killers gave me acute symptoms - e.g morphine,

codeine.

Has anyone else had a similar reaction to morphine or codeine?

Sue.

actually it is not starnge at all. As a nurse I have seen all kinds of drugs

used for the past 28 years. The use of Clonidine as well as other types of drugs

have been found to be effective for pain relief to some level. Clonidine was

used about 10 (?) years ago for pain by Rehabilitation physicians and by pain

management physicians in large universities where research was in progress. That

is how all of the anti-seizure meds like Neuronitin, and also the anti

depressants and mood elevators like Elavil kinda got started for the use of

pain. Someone started doing studies and found that these types of drugs have

some type of effectiveness against pain. The pain cycle can be very complex with

the release of endorphens, synapsing and all kinds of physiological activity.

There were other drugs like Clonidine that we used about 15 years ago and now I

just can't remember them all( showing my age now!). But

Sue,

I too cannot tolerate coedine. Can bring on an attack. Also,

Morphine does not work for me during an attack either. Demerol

works best for me. That goes to show drugs affect people in many

different ways. I have also read on posts that Dilaudid (sp?)

worked for many people. Last year when I was in the ER the Nurse

gave me that for an attack and it caused increased pain. She gave

me a second dose and the pain went through the roof. I then begged

her for demerol and ativan combo and I think she finally knocked me

out after a couple of doses.

Debs,

Nice to know i'm not alone in not being able to tolerate codeine. Prior to

having CP i used to take codeine (in combination with paracetamol, which you can

buy without prescription) and i took it without any problems. Initially i was

able to tolerate morphine too. Maybe you can tolerate the MST because it is slow

release, so there is less in the system at any one time. I've had pethidine for

acute pain.

Causes of pancreatitis

What Causes It?

What Causes It?

There are several possible causes of pancreatitis:

a.. Disease of the biliary tract. The biliary tract is the system of

organs and ducts (including the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts) that

creates, transports, stores, and releases bile into the duodenum for digestion.

The formation of stones in the biliary tract can block the main duct of the

pancreas as it enters the duodenum.

b.. Heavy alcohol use over a long period of time, which can raise

protein levels in pancreatic juices. Over time, the protein can form plugs,

blocking small pancreatic ducts. Alcohol also allows enzymes to pass more easily

through duct walls and damage the pancreas. Biliary tract stones and alcoholism

are the most common causes of pancreatitis.

c.. The drugs azathioprine, sulfonamides, corticosteroids, nonsteroidal

anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), and tetracyclines

d.. Infection with mumps, hepatitis virus, rubella, Epstein-Barr virus

(the cause of mononucleosis), and cytomegalovirus

e.. Abnormalities in the structure of the pancreas or the pancreatic or

bile ducts, including pancreatic cancer

f.. High levels of triglycerides (fats) in the blood

g.. Surgery to the abdomen, heart, or lungs that temporarily cuts off

blood supply to the pancreas, damaging tissue

h.. Injury resulting in compression of the pancreas against the spine

I hope this finds you and yours well

Debs,

I have just been a nurse who has worked in allot of different hospital settings.

As we say in the states " I have been around the block a few times ! " .

I have not taken the Clonidine nor the Neurontin. I have tried Calcium channel

blockers ( heart meds and blood pressure meds ) like Cardizem that was suppose

to help for pain but all it did was give me a blasting headache. It was awful.

Everyone responds differently. Neurontin is a drug that you can start on a low

dose and slowly build yourself up. One of the docs that I work with has

prescribed 11 pills a day for his patients. He tells me the side effects are

minimal. Sure sounds like an awful lot. But regardless of what meds you take,

you should have blood work done at least every 6 months to be sure your liver

and kidneys are excreting things well. I am glad that the Clondine is helpful

for you !

Lily

Re: Drugs that Cause Pancreatitis

Lily Wow are you a doc or nurse?

I was impressed. The other drug I take that seems to work like

clondine is Nortryptiline.

I dont have high blood pressure in fact I have very low, so the

Clondine doesnt affect that I just know that when I stop it, I need

to take more pain meds :)

Are you on neurontin and clondine? etc ?

Debs,

yes I still work as a nurse. I have good days and bad days. I have SOD and have

not been officially diagnosed with pancreatitis. But I can tell you that the

pain when it hits is severe. My doctor says that we just need to monitor my

pancreas presently. I have a CT done every year. My granmother died of

pancreatic cancer, so I stay on top of things as much as possible. I do not take

narcotics with consistency. I take Clidinium for my pain, it is an

anticholinergic, kinda like a muscle spasm reliever for the GI tract.

Do you still work as a nurse?

Yeh I tried the neurontin but it wasnt subsidised here so it was too

expensive but I see they make beign do a special script so when I

can get back into see my pain Guy I am going to ask about it.

I have been thinking that I need to engage a GI as well both guys I

see but havent for a almost 2 years I try not to see them as it

reminds me I am sick lol are both surgeons . I also havent seen my

pain doc for that long I have tried emailing him but with no success

so I may try again

How is your CP now? do you take daily meds for pain etc?
