Guest guest
Sandy, We got an excalibur dehydrator--mainly for making yogurt and love it. Right now, a have a quadruple batch cooling before adding starter! It's so nice not to have to make yogurt every day. We are a family of six and go through lots! The dehydrator does make constant noise because of the fan, so we have it in an side room that we can close the door to keep the noise down a bit (not real obnoxious, but irritating when I'm trying to go to sleep at night ;-) Rhonda daughter, UC Yogart in a dehydrater Have any of you or do any of you make yogart in a dehydrator? I am really tired of trying to keep up with our yograt with my little machines. If I understand it the dehydrators that you take the shelves out of you can make yogart in. If you have done this have you found it successful or a pain to have to monotor all the time? Thanks for any advice. Sandy M. Whole family SCD for almost 6 months in support of 5 yr old who raged. Guest guest
Ronda, would you mind sharing which of the excaliburs you have. I have looked at them on http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/dehydrators.asp but have not been sure which would be best. I would like to make at least a gallon at a time, more if possible. Do you just use quart jars? Do you put them in water? How do you know the temp is right? Sorry for all the questions. Guest guest
Sandy, We have the 2900 model--on Lucy's Kitchen Shop page it says you can make 6 qts of yogurt in it at once, but we have 9 qts in it right now! We use wide-mouth quart jars and the glass 2 qt jar that Lucy carries. There is no water involved. There is a temperature dial that you set. Guest guest
We love our Excalibur for making yogurt. It's the 5-tray size. I make a gallon of whole milk, a gallon of nonfat (for me), and 2 quarts of goat milk (one son can't tolerate cow's milk) all at one time. I have it in the laundry room so I can shut the door - the last thing I need in an already hot summer-time house is a heat-making machine! There's really no need to monitor it. You just set the temperature and come back 24 hours later and pull the jars out. The biggest problem I have is forgetting to take them out at the 24 hour mark. I finally came up with a system. I put it in last thing before going to bed at night, then put an empty jar on my pillow the next morning. That way when I go to bed the next night, it'll remind me to pull the yogurt out of the dehydrator. Lori > > Have any of you or do any of you make yogart in a dehydrator? Guest guest
After reading several posts today, I noticed that several have families who are all SCD in support of one or two people. My question is, Did the supporters go through " die off " issues? I think my dh will not be happy if he feels sick during the work week. (I also don't expect him to hold to it when I'm not looking.) - soon to start scd as a family
Guest guest
In our family I believe that all of us have gone through some die off. The only one that has been sever has been my youngest son who is the one we are on SCD for. The rest of us have had times of not feeling the best but not been to where we could not function normally. Well, I guess I have had a time that I got 'sick' and wondered if it was die off. My husband and oldest son have had the best winter/spring/summer in years. My husband and oldest son do not always follow 'strictly' SCD away from home. I ask that if Tobias is with them they don't sample other foods and h and I do follow strictly. I want to be able to tell Tobias that I am not eating anything that he can't have. He really needs to know that I am not expecting him to do something I won't do. Also, our home is SCD legal at all times. One time I had a sister in law bring in brownies but I had not visited with her since we started SCD and she did not know. When we have a party her it is SCD legal which has caused some stress with another son and his family but I figure that they are teens and adults, Tobias is 5, if he can do this everyday they can stand eating healthy for a few hours. Guest guest
My dehydrator temp guage is off by about 7-10 degrees. I'd suggest calibrating your machine for the first few times by using a more reliable thermometer. Guest guest
It probably depends on the state of his gut whether he would have die off issues. For us, My 2 sons and I went on SCD at the same time. My 5 year old with ASD had a hard time with vomiting for about 3 days. I got a headache and vomiting on day 2 and then fatigue after that. I do have yeast issues, though. My youngest son did not appear to have any reactions other than the fact he eats like a horse now instead of picking at his food! If I 'cheat' at all I can feel it the next day, but again, I have yeast issues. My husband is still on a regular diet with grains for pretty much the same reason your husband may be reluctant to change. He does enjoy the meals I make for dinner though which have not really changed. Good Luck!
